Friedrichshafen/Berlin, 21 September 2010. At the Innotrans trade fair for transport technology in Berlin from 21 to 24 September, the Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH will be presenting forward-looking drive solutions for the rail industry that will meet the EU Stage III B emission regulations that are to come into force as from 2012. The complete portfolio of environmentally-friendly trains of the near future will include the newly developed Series 1600 engines for locomotives and railcars, the new generation of Series 4000 engines for locomotives and underfloor Powerpack drive units for railcars. For the repowering of existing locomotive fleets, the drive and propulsion specialist mtu is introducing the PAU Traction automation system.

The completely newly developed 12 cylinder Series 1600 rail engine will be launched on the market as from 2013. The drive system has been designed for small shunting locomotives (below 690 kW) and railcars (565 to 660 kW). mtu has thus rounded off its product range for the power range below the Series 4000 engine, while extending its range of underfloor railcar Powerpacks upwards.

The new generation of Series 4000 engines has been certified by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority for future EU Stage III B emission standards. Series 4000 engines incorporate exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filters and already meet the EU Stage III B emissions regulations that are due to come into force as from 2012. They cover a power range from 1,000 to 2,700 kilowatts and will be launched on the market in stages as 8, 12, 16 and 20–cylinder versions as from 2012. Siemens will also be presenting its new Vectron diesel locomotive, which incorporates a 16-cylinder new generation Series 4000 engine, for the first time at this year’s Innotrans. The EU CleanER-D (Clean European Rail-Diesel) project is going a stage further. In this project mtu in collaboration with Deutsche Bahn and other development partners will be testing new concept technologies to meet future emission levels based on the EU Stage III B engine. The engine is to be installed in a Class 225 diesel freight locomotive in spring 2011.

As a systems provider, mtu also supplies the Powerline automation system for drive systems based on the Series 4000 locomotive engine. Powerline monitors and controls all the functions of the drive system and now includes a new module to provide simple repowering of locomotives.

For underfloor Powerpack drive units, mtu will also be offering a solution that meets EU Stage III B emission standards as from 2012. The traditional Powerpack with the 6H 1800 engine complies with these emission levels by incorporating an SCR catalytic converter and covers a power range from 315 to 390 kilowatts. A Powerpack will be launched on the market with the future Series 1600 mtu rail engine. As from 2013, it is to be available with power outputs of 565, 625 and 660 kilowatts. As from summer 2011, mtu will be performing trials with a hybrid Powerpack in collaboration with Westfrankenbahn (Western Franconia Railway) that will incorporate regenerative braking. This innovative drive system is expected to deliver fuel savings of up to 25 per cent.

In addition to after-sales products (mtu ValueCare) that have already been introduced on the market, such as its business in original spare parts and reman engines, mtu will be presenting its Remote Services product for the railway market for the first time. Following extensive field trials at the end of 2011, rail customers will be able to order a module for remote data transfer that will enable operational data to be monitored and downloaded worldwide from the company’s website. This will make it possible for the operator to optimise the scheduling of maintenance work and to respond faster in the event of a fault. mtu will be offering Remote Services for new engines and for retrofits.
