Great seeing you at InnoTrans
After a long three years, it was a great pleasure to once again meet with you in person at InnoTrans 2022 in Berlin. Thank you for stopping by the booth and sharing with us your thoughts and insights regarding our commitment to Powering the path to net zero in the railway industry. We hope you had a pleasant and informative visit – and as much fun as we did!
For us at Rolls-Royce, InnoTrans offered the perfect opportunity to showcase some of the safe, smart and sustainable technologies we are currently developing to optimally support clients in achieving their net zero targets. We particularly welcomed your input on how they might best be adapted to your specific operations. Check out what else we’re working on.
Powering the path to net zero
Above all, InnoTrans allowed us to gather valuable feedback on technologies we are currently exploring and developing for powering your path to net zero – H2 engines, fuel cells, battery solutions, mtu Hybrid PowerPacks, locomotive solutions as well as sustainable fuels.
One net zero possibility for locomotives
Hydrogen engines offer great potential for enabling railways to achieve net zero emissions, for example, by powering locomotives. The mtu Series 4000 gas engine can already be operated with an admixture of 25% hydrogen. The first powergen engines to run entirely on hydrogen will be launched in 2023.
H2 engine concepts we are currently developing are aimed at optimizing engine performance, safety and reliability while keeping lifecycle costs low. In addition to continuous power density and efficiency improvements, we’re also looking at the bigger green hydrogen infrastructure picture.
Potential hydrogen alternative for railcars
As was discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), hydrogen will play an important role for achieving net zero energy. In the railway sector, hydrogen fuel cells offer the possibility for a completely carbon-free, climate-neutral drive option for railcars, particularly for the long term.
H2 fuel cells like the one we showcased at COP26 can also be used as an emissions-free power source for the adjoining microgrid infrastructures. Scalable and extremely versatile, fuel cells offer tremendous possibilities – especially when combined with batteries.
Clean, flexible railcar electrification
Looking for a scalable, noise-free, zero-carbon electric drive solution to power your railcars? Partial to fully electrified PowerPack concepts for railcars we are currently exploring also include scenarios for the necessary charging infrastructures.
We have profound specialized knowledge of applications expertise for all types of rail vehicles, including over 25 years of system and 10 years of battery integration know-how. Whether for new built or repower projects, we can provide expert support at every step.
mtu Hybrid PowerPacks
Compact, flexible and sustainable
What you get when you optimally combine the advantages of battery and diesel power – as in the case of mtu Hybrid PowerPacks – is more than the sum of the two. For one, you get a slim-and-trim and fully integrated drive solution offering a high degree of flexibility for a wide range of railcar types.
Both easy-to-install and eco-friendly, the mtu PowerPack Series 1800 delivers proven performance while immediately reducing carbon emissions by up to 25%. And that’s just the start. They can also be powered with EN 15940 and e-fuels to further lower emissions.
Durable, dependable and clean
Keeping things running is key for any railway operation. Our drive and system solutions for locomotives, push-pull trains and special-purpose vehicles have not only demonstrated durable and dependable performance in thousands of applications worldwide, but also clean operational efficiency.
Apart from loose engines, system solutions with mtu Series 1300 and 1500 optimally integrate all drive components into one compact solution, allowing for easy installation and maintenance. The same can be said of our heavy hitters – mtu Series 1600, 2000 and 4000. Most of them can be operated with synthetic fuels such as those according to the EN 15940 standard.
Cut carbon emissions by up to 90%, or even 100%
The term sustainable or alternative fuels describes a variety of different fuels. Only when these are produced with electricity generated entirely from renewable sources are they truly green and clean. Other factors like energy density, availability and local infrastructures also play a crucial role.
Most of our engines and PowerPacks are designed to run on both EN 15940 fuels like hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as well as e-fuels based on e-hydrogen. When powered by the former, they cut CO2 emissions by as much as 90%. In the case of e-fuels, even eliminate them altogether.
Overhaul, reman & lifecycle services
Save time, money and materials
Getting the most out of investments is crucial to business success – just one reason why our overhaul and reman services are worth taking a closer look at. The solutions we offer deliver the same high level of performance, service life and operational quality as new products – even identical or better warranty coverage.
In addition to overhaul, the process of exchanging your old engine or mtu PowerPack for a remanufactured one saves you time and money. Our products let you benefit from the latest model-related technological updates and advancements. By reusing materials, our services also benefit the environment.
