Friedrichshafen, August 19, 2014. MTU Friedrichshafen, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, will be exhibiting its drive and service solutions at the international trade show for railway technology Innotrans from 23 to 26 September in Berlin in hall 18, booth 301. The company will be celebrating an anniversary on this occasion: Products from mtu have been driving the rail industry for 90 years. The exhibits include a historical Maybach GO 5 engine as well as current drive solutions such as an underfloor engine from the Series 1600 and a locomotive engine from the Series 4000. Automation solutions and services complete the mtu product range at Innotrans.
Rail drive solutions since 1924
Karl Maybach laid the foundation for rail drives of the mtu brand 90 years ago with the first high-speed railcar diesel engine in the world, the Maybach G 4a. At Innotrans, mtu will be exhibiting the in its time best-known and most widely used railcar engine in Europe, the Maybach GO 5. Maybach developed the engine for the legendary express train “Fliegender Hamburger” and thus revolutionized rail traffic: The power of this predecessor of present-day mtu rail drives made high-speed rail travel possible.
Drive solutions for rail cars
Since 1924, mtu and its predecessor companies have supplied more than 20,000 railroad drive systems. The company still leads the way today when it comes to innovative and reliable rail drives. For railcars, mtu offers the compact underfloor engine systems "PowerPack.” These PowerPacks are available with Series 1800 diesel engines (power range from 315 to 390 kW) and Series 1600 diesel engines (power range from 565 to 700 kW). At Innotrans, mtu will be showcasing a PowerPack based on a Series 1600 engine which will drive the future high-speed trains of the British Intercity Express Programme (IEP). At the heart of these diesel-electric PowerPacks are mtu 12V 1600 R80L engines generating 700 kW. They meet the stringent emission regulations of stage EU IIIB.
Drive solutions for locomotives
For locomotives, mtu offers Series 1600 and Series 4000 engines. The most powerful locomotive engines from mtu are those of Series 4000. They cover a power range from 850 to 3,300 kW in different emission stages. For the European market, compliance with the current emission stage EU IIIB is guaranteed by means of exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filters. At the mtu booth, visitors can view a 16V 4000 R84 engine with an output of 2,400 kW. mtu’s in-engine measures for Series 4000 engines suffice for achieving the lowest possible nitrogen oxide emissions, meaning that SCR aftertreatment can be dispensed with. As a systems provider, mtu also offers so-called PowerModules, complete drive systems consisting of diesel engine and traction generator as well as additional components required for the locomotive’s operations.
Automation solutions
To permit simple integration of the drive systems, mtu’s engine portfolio is supplemented by the automation system Powerline. Powerline monitors, controls and regulates all functions of the drive system and, upon customer request, of additional main components of the rail vehicle. The Powerline system is complemented by the “Capacitor Power System” (CaPoS): A modern starting system for all mtu rail engines. It serves as an alternative to the battery, consists of concentrated capacitor units and, among others things, has the advantage of clearly reduced lifecycle costs combined with significantly reduced weight and volume.
Comprehensive range of services
The extensive services of "mtu ValueCare" round off the product range. These include customized maintenance contracts, rapid supply of spare parts, consumables such as engine coolants, engine oil and filters and also remanufactured engines and parts. A reman engine from the Series 4000 will be exhibited at the mtu booth.
