We keep on answering
As the energy landscape continues to change, you can count on us to keep answering the call for cleaner, more efficient power solutions. We combine flexible products with intelligent controls, consulting expertise and comprehensive services to offer future-ready solutions that always deliver optimum performance over the entire lifecycle. The latest addition to this robust suite of solutions is our mtu Series 500. With the mtu Series 500, we offer both natural gas and biogas gensets that cover the 250 - 550 kWe power range. They are are ideally suited for a variety of applications including utility, industrial manufacturing, hospital, data center and other applications.
Gas gensets powered by the mtu Series 500 can be operated with a gas blending of hydrogen, making them future-ready. They also have the possibility to be converted to 100% hydrogen, for when hydrogen is more widely accessible and economical as a primary fuel. mtu Series 500 gensets also feature smart controls in the form of the mtu Module Control (MMC), which monitors all genset activities. The MMC enables the units to seamlessly integrate with microgrid environments. It also creates a digital link to our global service network for proactive troubleshooting and increased uptime.
mtu Series 500 gas generator sets provide:
Flexibility
The modular nature of our products and individualized scope of delivery enables us to offer tailored solutions for all types of power generation applications – from stand-alone gensets to complex combined heat and power plants.
The highly flexible mtu Module Control (MMC) automation solution enables simple integration, even with complex systems such as microgrids. To meet increasing emissions requirements, engine-specific exhaust gas aftertreatment (EGAT) solutions are available. These integrated solutions ensure emissions compliance as well as full power and superior load acceptance, super-fast start-up times and absolute reliability. The EGAT system can be flexibly integrated with different options for existing plants.
Low OPEX
Significantly higher power efficiency allows for significantly lower operating costs. Our mtu Series 500 gas gensets achieve 42.6% efficiency, which is considered “best in class” for this power segment. Click on the use case below to see how we put this high efficiency to work in a microgrid with intelligent system integration to provide substantial operating cost savings.

mtu Series 500 highlights
Gas engine
Improved combustion technology increases engine efficiency and lowers fuel costs.
Generator
Optimally tailored to the engine, the generator provides best-in-class reliability and efficiency.
Ignition system
A microprocessor-controlled ignition system optimally adjusts the ignition time and ignition energy to the quality of the gas.
Mixture cooler
The two-stage mixture cooler improves engine performance and heat utilization.
Digital connectivity
The system can be equipped with a data logger providing access to our digital solutions, including remote monitoring, fast and reliable service support and, soon, further features such as predictive failure prevention and operational optimization.
mtu Module Control (MMC)
If the gas engine is the heart of the genset, then the mtu Module Control is the brain. Housed in a separate panel next to the genset, the MMC automation system handles all important functions needed for continuously monitoring and controlling the entire system.
Flexible heat recovery unit
This unit ensures highest thermal efficiencies for the jacket water, lube oil and coolant mixture. (Expanded scope of supply / GR configuration)
Exhaust heat recovery
The exhaust heat recovery system with exhaust heat exchanger achieves highest thermal efficiencies in CHP systems. With the mtu 12V500 GS version, the exhaust heat exchanger is supplied separately. (Expanded scope of supply / GC configuration)
