  • Upgraded mtu 8V0110 GS150 natural gas generator set optimized to meet market needs
  • New design delivers standby gas power solutions ideal for space-limited areas and existing-structure upgrades

Mankato, Minn. - Rolls-Royce has redesigned its mtu 8V0110 GS150 standby gas generator set specifically for the North American market to feature a smaller footprint with reduced weight and noise emissions. The newly designed systems will be available for delivery beginning in July.

This redesign in the 150kW power range reflects growing customer demands for compact, lighter-weight, low-noise standby power solutions, especially for applications in space-limited areas and for existing building upgrade projects.

“Many engineers are now specifying natural gas gen sets rather that diesel ones for several reasons,” said Paul Koch, senior vice president and COO of Curtis Power Solutions, LLC, an authorized distributor for mtu power solutions located in Baltimore, MD. “A major advantage is that they do not require a fuel tank, so natural gas generator sets take up less space and can be more easily installed in tight spots, such as on the roof of a building. This is especially helpful in major metropolitan areas where available space is at a premium. Cities like Washington DC are seeing many more natural gas gen sets than they were just five years ago.”

Many engineers also see natural gas generator sets as being a more sustainable solution for certain applications over their diesel counterparts. For existing building projects, where standby systems are being installed after the fact, the natural gas generator sets also prove advantageous. In many cases, these buildings were not originally designed for a backup power system and they are unable to accommodate the size and/or weight of a traditional diesel standby system. This makes the smaller footprint of the mtu 8V0110 GS150 very attractive.

“Rolls-Royce recognized the many customer benefits that an enhanced portfolio of gas standby gen sets could offer, and this redesign is a way to help fulfill that customer need,” said Koch.

“Our engineering and manufacturing teams have done an outstanding job of enhancing this mtu gas standby gen set with features and benefits that our customers were looking for in the 150kW power range,” said Sandra Daily, project manager, MTU America Inc. “We are excited to provide our customers with this system redesign.”

As part of its ongoing product development, Rolls-Royce is also looking at optimizing its mtu standby natural gas offerings for higher kW nodes to meet growing customer demand.

In addition to its portfolio of standby natural gas solutions, Rolls-Royce has a full line of mtu continuous gas systems from 128 kWe - 2,535 kWe.
