Friedrichshafen, 12 October 2009. On Thursday, 8 October, the Tognum subsidiary, MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH, celebrated together with Deutsche Bahn AG at the DB Cottbus location, the 400th repowering of a V290-model multi-purpose locomotive. Within a modernisation period from 2002 to September 2009, mtu supplied a total of 412 Series 4000 diesel engines to Deutsche Bahn. Rainer Breidenbach, Tognum COO with responsibility for the business unit Engines, said, "With this project, and the resulting follow-on contracts, we have again shown that we are the preferred partner for modern, efficient and individual power solutions.”

The 8V 4000 R41 engines with an output of 1,000 kilowatts (1,341 bhp) replace the mtu 12V 652 engines, some of which proved their worth for more than 30 years. The operator, Deutsche Bahn, profits from the repowering as it means they have the advantages of new engines without having to invest in totally new locomotives. The new engines not only have a higher output but reduce at the same time the operating and maintenance costs. Thanks to their compact dimensions, they fit into the prescribed engine spaces and can also take advantage of the available peripherals. A tailored interface technology between the mtu engine-management system and the locomotive controls ensures a simplified installation of the power units.
