Germany’s best apprentice works at mtu

Friedrichshafen, 12 December 2011. Germany’s best machine assembler works for propulsion and power solution specialist Tognum. Hakan Secil, a skilled technician at Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen, finished his training at the top of his year and in recognition of that, Hans Heinrich Driftmann, President of the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), will present him with an award in Berlin today. The opening address at the award ceremony will be held by Federal Minister of Economics, Dr. Philipp Rösler.

Next generation from within the company: For Tognum, this is the third time that one of its engine assembly mechanics has received the award. “Hakan Secil is the best in his field – throughout Germany,” said Dr. Ulrich Dohle, member of the Tognum executive board for the “Technology and Operations” division which also includes the assembly section. “We can be proud of the fact that his commitment and hard work have earned him the title of Best Apprentice 2011.” Since this area of vocational training was introduced at mtu in 2000, 39 engine assembly mechanics have completed the course and set out on their careers.

Since completing his course, Hakan Secil has been working in the series assembly section for mtu’s Series 2000 engines. The engines he builds here will later propel ships and drive electricity generators or construction machines and it is the experience he gathered during his time as an apprentice which provides the basis for the work he does every day. For him, the high level of practical orientation during training at mtu was the key to outstanding qualifications. “As an apprentice I worked in the assembly section from the very first day,” said Secil. “And that gave me the ideal preparation for every aspect of my work at the plant.”

This is the sixth time that the German DIHK has run the “Best Apprentice” award scheme. This year, more than 200 of the best apprentices will be presented with a certificate and a trophy. All of the award-winners completed their final examinations with the grade 2Excellent”, making them the best graduates among more than 300,000 examinees. This year, for the first time, the award ceremony can be viewed live on the Internet at www.dihk.de/bestenehrung.
