mtu Onsite Energy to supply generator sets to APR Energy for emergency power in recovering Japan

Tognum Group subsidiary mtu Onsite Energy Corp. provided 43 generator sets to Japan as part of a 203 MW emergency power contract between Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and APR Energy (APR).

Tognum Group subsidiary mtu Onsite Energy Corp. provided 43 generator sets to Japan as part of a 203 MW emergency power contract between Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and APR Energy (APR). APR Energy, headquartered in Jacksonville, FL specializes in the rapid global deployment of custom turnkey power solutions that utilize both diesel and gas turbine technologies. The generator sets powered by mtu 16V 4000 diesel engines were assembled at the mtu Onsite Energy facility in Mankato, MN and then containerized before beginning their journey to Japan.
In the wake of Japan’s recent Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyo-Oki earthquake and tsunami, these emergency power plants supplied by APR Energy will provide additional electricity to the cities of Yokosuka and Hitachinaka, both located on Japan’s eastern shore where much of the damage occurred. The two power generation sites successfully started up in July of this year.
“We are pleased to take part in this emergency power project for Japan by supplying our containerized diesel generator sets to APR Energy,” says Christof von Branconi, Tognum COO with responsibility for the business unit Onsite Energy & Components. “Containerized diesel generators have the advantages of quick deployment and easy installation as well as excellent fuel efficiency. They will complement the project’s gas turbine generators by adding operational flexibility.”
The mtu Onsite Energy Series 4000 generator sets exhibit superior load acceptance and transient response due to their Advanced Diesel Engine Control (ADEC) system and approximately 20 percent more cubic inches of cylinder displacement than comparable generator drive engines. This increased displacement results in more reserve horsepower and torque when they are needed, while still delivering excellent fuel economy.
