DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway : No. 1 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Supplier to the US Army

The Series 890 engines are developed and manufactured by DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway, a DaimlerChrysler business unit, which is represented through the brands of mtu and Detroit Diesel.

Lauderdale - The Series 890 engines are developed and manufactured by DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway, a DaimlerChrysler business unit, which is represented through the brands of mtu and Detroit Diesel. The two companies have been working together since 1994 when they started cooperation for the development, production and sales of two new commercial engine series. mtu and the off-highway segment of Detroit Diesel are merged under a single management responsibility.
DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway is one of the world's leading manufacturers of diesel engines and propulsion systems and the undisputed market leader in the military diesel market. They are also the most significant supplier of heavy-duty diesel engines to the US Army. The total number of military engines delivered worldwide totals in excess of half a million units.
In the segment of military engines from 50 to 500 kW, DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway holds, in the accessible market (without China and CIS), a worldwide market share of over 40 per cent, in the segment over 500 kW, their share amounts to 70 per cent. With a range of eleven different engine series, the entire spectrum from 100 hp to 2700 hp is covered. mtu and Detroit Diesel engines power all military applications in Armies around the world.
In the segment of military and governmental vessels, DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway has an equally strong position. In the range of engines between 1,300 to 13,000 hp (1,000 and 10,000 kW), they hold more than 60 per cent of the accessible market worldwide, a recent example of which is the X-Craft catamaran of the US Navy. The 73-meter ship, which is due for delivery in mid 2004, is scheduled for a speed of 50 knots (57 mph).
One of the most prominent orders for the US Military is an mtu engine, which powers the US Marine Corps' Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV). This amphibious vehicle weighs 37 tons and reaches a top speed of 20 up to 30 knots (mph) on the water and 45 mph on land. Its power source is a 12 cylinder MT 883 diesel engine with a power of 2,016 kW (2740 HP). This engine is a special version of an existing series, and has been specfically adapted and upgraded in power for the EFV.
