The Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen recently received a major order for nearly 200 engines for the Spanish armored personnel carrier Pizarro II. The order is worth a total of approximately €17 million. The engines of the Series 199 have a power output of 530 kW at 2,300 rpm. In addition to the engines, the order also includes the cooling systems. The client is the Spanish general contractor General Dynamics Santa Barbara Systemas.

The Pizarro II is designed for a crew of up to eleven soldiers. With a battle weight of approximately 28 tons, it reaches speeds of up to 70 kph. The personnel carrier is a joint Austrian-Spanish development. In 1996, the Spanish armed forces already ordered more than 100 of the predecessor model, Pizarro I, which were also fitted with mtu engines. The Spanish Pizarro is equivalent to the similar Ulan in Austria, which uses mtu engines as well. The positive experience of the Spanish and Austrian armed forces led to this new order in Spain.
