mtu debuts as supplier of industrial engines to Bomag

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH has won a new customer for its industrial engines: Bomag GmbH.

Bomag rüstet alle neuen 32, 37, 47 und 55 Tonnen schweren Müllverdichter mit Motoren der mtu-Baureihen 400 und 500 aus. Die bis zu 440 Kilowatt starken Motoren basieren auf Nutzfahrzeug-Motoren der Typen OM 460 LA und OM 502 LA von Mercedes-Benz und erfüllen die Emissionsstufe EU III B durch eine SCR-Abgasnachbehandlung. Friedrichshafen, 3 July 2012. Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH has won a new customer for its industrial engines: Bomag GmbH. The engineering company based in Boppard, Germany is a world market leader in the field of compaction technology and a member of the French Fayat Group. It is using mtu Series 400 and 500 engines to power all of its new refuse compactors models with weights of 32, 37, 47 and 55 tons. Its newly-built BC 972 and BC 1172 machines have been rolling out of the Bomag factory in Boppard near Koblenz since early 2012. BC 672 and BC 772 models will follow at the end of the year. Refuse compactors are special vehicles which help to distribute and compact waste at landfill sites. The high intrinsic weight of the vehicles facilitates compacting of the refuse, while bladed or toothed disc wheels crush, knead and compress. Bomag refuse compactors are specially designed for the tough demands on distribution and compacting which prevail at landfill sites, where the degree of compaction is crucial to the profitability of the site.

mtu Series 400 and 500 engines deliver power outputs up to 440 kilowatts and are based on the commercial vehicle engines OM 460 LA and OM 502 LA from Mercedes-Benz. They comply with emissions stage EU III B regulations through the use of SCR exhaust aftertreatment. For emissions stages EU IV and EPA Tier 4 final, which are set to apply from 2014, mtu is to supply prototypes of its new generation of engines to Bomag. As a first step, these will be its 6R 1000, 6R 1300 and 6R 1500 units.

In the new refuse compactor models, the mtu engines deliver the power required by the hydro-static drive, which then converts the installed engine power into torque, and in turn into pushing power or driving speed. That enables the vehicles to operate efficiently on steep inclines, to shift mountains of trash, and to maneuver swiftly. In addition to refuse compactors, Bomag’s portfolio includes a wide range of other compacting machinery – from their light equipment vehicles to tandem rollers, single-drums, soil stabilizers and recyclers, road finishers and cold planers.
