16V 4000: The Strongest Mining Engine in Its Category

DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway presented its upgraded 16V 4000 engine for use in heavy duty mining vehicles at the BAUMA 2004.
DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway presented its upgraded 16V 4000 engine for use in heavy duty mining vehicles at the BAUMA 2004. The new engine has an output of 3,000 bhp (2,247 kW), is the highest-output engine of its category and is being adapted to the increased market requirements of the class of 300-ton dump trucks. In April 2004, the first preproduction series engines of this type will be delivered; and series production will begin in October 2004.

In order to increase output, the engine was revised in various areas. For example, the 16V 4000 now has a powerful turbocharger system with four K365 turbochargers from KKK. This turbocharger system was taken over from the successful 16V 4000 R41 engine, which is being used in other applications. The engine is equipped with the wide spread DDEC electronics system which is in use in over 1000 engines. Apart from the usual engine parameters, this system also monitors the turbocharger speeds.

For a load factor up to 30%, maintenance intervals of 16,000 hours are expected. This is achieved by reengineering the main bearings and big-end bearings. At the same time, the thickness of the sputtered bearing surface was adjusted to the hard operating conditions in mining vehicles.
