UIC-Certificate for mtu engine 16V 4000 R41 for railway applications

The 16V 4000 R41 is the first rail engine with more than 1000 kW worldwide that has been approved by UIC and additionally fulfills the emission regulation ERRI 2003 (European Rail Research Institute).

The 16V 4000 R41 is the first rail engine with more than 1000 kW worldwide that has been approved by UIC and additionally fulfills the emission regulation ERRI 2003 (European Rail Research Institute). End of 2002, mtu experts were presented with the UIC-Certificate for the engine by a representative of the International Union of Railways (Union International des Chemins de Fer) in Paris.

Previously, mtu had successfully concluded a series of complex continuous-duty tests, investigations and quality assessments. In the course of 460 hours, different performance assessments and one continuous-duty assessment in particular were successfully carried out under pre-set conditions which simulated heavy-duty rail-specific use. Additional tests were carried out to prove that the engine meets the emission regulations. The tests also demonstrated the durability and wear-resistance of all major engine components as well as their operational reliability.

mtu has already received orders for the 16V 4000 R41 for important, future-oriented rail industry projects. Examples of this are the repowering of Deutsche Bahn AG's V218 long-distance locomotive and an ÖBB order for drive units for 70 diesel-electric Rh2016 locomotives. The first locomotives went into service in February 2002.

Founded in Paris in 1922, the International Union of Railways now consists of approx. 150 railway and transport companies from all around the globe. Its aim is to promote the interests of the railway companies as well as railway transportation. In recent years, a special focus has been placed on the technical co-operation in international railway traffic.
