At Sifer, MTU Friedrichshafen has also provided information on the new Stage 3A PowerPack for sub-floor propulsion of power cars. mtu has been enjoying great success with the PowerPacks for several years now. In 1997, mtu became the first supplier of these worldwide. More than 3500 units have been ordered to date. Last year, around 500 were supplied – a new sales record. PowerPacks are complete drive systems, which include further components besides the engine such as gears, cooling and filter systems which are installed sub-floor.

The core of this unit is a type 6H 1800 engine with 360 kW power output, which conforms to the limit values of the EU Stage 3A directive, thus making the PowerPack the power unit for power cars with the lowest emissions worldwide. As with locomotives, the company also provides particulate traps for PowerPacks. Since 2004, the Stage 3A PowerPacks have been undergoing testing in Denmark in a Siemens AG Desiro and a LINT train from the Salzgitter-based company ALSTOM LHB GmbH. For regular deployment in regional transport, over 70 Stage 3SA PowerPacks have been supplied for powering LINT vehicles that have since been put into service by the rail operator Arriva in Denmark.
