SIGMAR GABRIEL, GERMAN MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS AND ENERGY, VISITS ROLLS-ROYCE SUBSIDIARY IN MAGDEBURG

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN/MAGDEBURG, GERMANY – Dr Ulrich Dohle, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, welcomed Sigmar Gabriel, Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, at its MTU Reman Technologies facility in Magdeburg, whilst showcasing the company’s world leading clean engine technology.

Dr Dohle said: "High-tech, green-tech technologies for propulsion and power generation that carry the 'Made in Germany' cachet help to improve our ecological footprint. Our traditional industries have a major contribution to make in addressing the urgent issues of the future, such as mobility, ecologically sound global trade, sustainability and job creation. The export potential is significant and we are perfectly placed to take advantage of it."

Rolls-Royce Power Systems provides environmentally friendly solutions for reducing emissions and lowering the consumption of energy and natural resources. These include gas engines, that generate one-third less carbon dioxide than diesel engines, and engines that can run on renewable or alternative fuels such as biogas, methanol, ethanol, bio-oil, and liquid gas (LNG).

Dohle emphasized the huge potential carried by the maritime industry, which employs some 400,000 people in Germany. Pursuit of a high-tech, green-tech strategy in maritime industries would be a unique opportunity for Germany to put itself at the international forefront of green technology and gain a crucial competitive advantage. "The maritime industry wants to take on a bigger role as innovation driver, technology leader and job-provider," said Dohle.

MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg is a member of the Rolls-Royce Power Systems group and offers a prime example of sustainable business. The Magdeburg location is the group's global technology centre for remanufacturing i.e. the industrial overhauling of powerful diesel and gas engines carrying the mtu brand. Magdeburg has developed processes for giving used mtu engines a second or even third lease of life, and is continually refining them. It has now dismantled over one thousand engines, overhauled their components and assemblies, and rebuilt them into as-new units – a process that saves an immense amount of material, energy, cost and time.

MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg has four single-cylinder test stands for its research into future engine technologies. Magdeburg's development engineers specialize in alternative fuels and innovative combustion techniques, and their results and findings will provide the foundation for engines of the future.
