ROLLS-ROYCE OFFERS SOLUTION TO STABILISE POWER IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Rolls-Royce has unveiled its energy solution for the Ressano Garcia Power Station, which supplies electrical power to the national grid in Mozambique.
- Mozambique’s largest power generation facility is powered by 13 Rolls-Royce B35:40V20 natural gas engines
- Generated power will be fed directly into the local grid
MOZAMBIQUE, AFRICA – Rolls-Royce has unveiled its energy solution for the Ressano Garcia Power Station, which supplies electrical power to the national grid in Mozambique. The power plant includes 13 Rolls-Royce B35:40V20 natural gas-fired internal combustion engines. It is the largest power generation facility in Mozambique operated by Rolls-Royce medium speed gas engines. The engines have an electrical output of 120 megawatts.
For countries like Mozambique, this technology solution is an important element in building up national electrification. Sub-Saharan Africa faces a severe energy challenge and natural gas is a solution to the problem of providing consistent energy supply. Gas-fired power plants take less time to build than nuclear or coal-fired plants and can offer a rapid solution to stabilise power supplies. The Ressano Garcia Power Station is owned and operated by independent power producer Gigawatt Mozambique. The design standard for the Ressano Garcia Power Station meets the guidelines outlined by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers B31.8 to protect users.
At a customer event to present the energy solution, Andrea Nono, CEO of mtu South Africa, said: “Some mtu employees are trained on Rolls-Royce products to ensure we offer an end-to-end power solution. mtu South Africa, a wholly owned Rolls-Royce Power Systems company, was involved in the commissioning of this project which was completed in 18 months and created job opportunities during construction.
