Bringing the benefits of natural gas to the oil field

The new mtu Gas PowerPack gives oil & gas operators the ability to leverage the benefits of natural gas to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and carbon emissions of their upstream operations. Widely considered the cleanest of the fossil fuels, natural gas produces fewer emissions of nearly all types of air pollutants and carbon dioxide than any other petroleum-based fuel type.

Based on the proven Series 4000 gas engine with over 3,000 units sold for continuous power generation applications, the mtu Gas PowerPack has been optimized for the needs of the oilfield. It is certified to meet the latest EPA Tier 2 requirements for mobile spark-ignited engines and can run on treated onsite gas. It is also very flexible in terms of both operation and frac site configurations, requiring only half the number of trailers onsite to achieve the same production as a traditional diesel system.

Ignition system

Ignition systems for individual cylinders allow for the most efficient level of operation for all cylinders, even with variable CH4 content. The ignition voltage display gives customers information on the state of the spark plugs.

Knock detection

Cylinder-specific knock detection and regulation protect the engine from abnormal operating conditions, and guarantees safe operation even with natural gas containing low levels of methane.

Engine controls

New ECU software provides greater load step capability and more fuel flexibility (H2 ready).

Gearbox

Preheated gearbox provides increased cold start capability and improved transmission life.

Driveline couplings

New coupling design reduces time-intensive alignment checks in the field to just standard maintenance intervals.

Generator

Perfectly tuned to the engine and made by renowned manufacturers, the generator ensures a high level of reliability and optimal efficiency.

Automation systems MIP & MMC

Motor interface panel (MIP) with stand-alone mtu Module Control (MMC). The MMC provides all the functions necessary for controlling the system. All the auxiliary drives required for the CHP system can be operated from here. The integrated power circuitry minimizes the customer’s need for cabling on site.
