Friedrichshafen, September 19, 2013. The mtu Series 8000 was recently awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The new ABS NVR certification, a requirement for the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) programs, was awarded to Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH after 1,500 hours of testing of the 20V 8000 that included extensive run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions. Additional validation testing was also completed in a commercial marine application, further demonstrating the versatility of the Series 8000, which joins the 8V 396 in the mtu portfolio of engines with ABS NVR certification.

Since their introduction in 2000, Series 8000 engines have set the benchmark for modern diesel propulsion plants in the 7200kW to 10,000kW power range. More than 200 engines are sold and 170 units are in operation with a range of international customers, making the Series 8000 the top seller in its performance class.

The Series 8000 can be found in passenger ferries, rescue tugs, large displacement yachts, naval auxiliary vessels, patrol vessels, corvettes, frigates, and multi-purpose ships with stringent naval requirements.

“The Series 8000 has an outstanding reputation in many naval applications around the world. The reputation is unmatched. Now this award ABS NVR confirms that we are top-notch with our Series 8000 engines,” said Knut Mueller, Vice President Sales Governmental at MTU Friedrichshafen.

The American Bureau of Shipping is a classification society, with a mission to promote the security of life, property and the natural environment, primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related structures and equipment.
