Posted on March 29, 2004

DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway, one of the world-wide largest suppliers of diesel engines and drive systems for industrial applications, presented its products and services at BAUMA 2004.
  • Standard business unit with world-wide sales network
  • Engines conform with current and future exhaust emission laws
  • Ten engine series between 40 and 3,650 kW (30 - 2,700 kW)

DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway, one of the world-wide largest suppliers of diesel engines and drive systems for industrial applications, presented its products and services at BAUMA 2004. All off-highway activities of the DaimlerChrysler Group are concentrated in the Off-Highway business unit. These include the scope of business of MTU Friedrichshafen, the off-highway share of the Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) and the off-highway share of the DaimlerChrysler's Commercial Vehicle Division. In addition, there is a sales agreement with VM Motori, which makes the off-highway products of the Italian manufacturer available for world-wide distribution within DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway.

With sales of EUR 1.7 billion (2003), DaimlerChrysler is one of the world's largest suppliers of off-highway drive systems. With 15 subsidiaries, 150 distributors and 1,000 authorized dealers, its sales and service organization is globally established. DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway is represented on the market by the mtu, Detroit Diesel and VM brands. Except in the construction, industry and mining vehicle sectors, these engines and drive systems are also marketed in other industries, energy production sector. This leads to synergies for such companies which operate not only industrial machines but also other equipment, such as generator systems or pumps. These customers receive drive systems, services and spare parts, all from one source.

Engines conform to current and future exhaust emission laws

All modern mining, construction and industrial engines in the DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway product program conform with current exhaust emission specifications and will also conform to the next applicable stage, i.e. EPA Tier 3 or EU- Nonroad 97/68/EC in the case of engines with a capacity of up to 750 bhp (560 kW) and EPA-non-road 40 CFR 89 stage 2 in the case of engines with outputs higher than 750 bhp. In order to conform to the new standards, which will come into effect from 2006 onwards, the different parts of the engines are currently being reengineered depending on the type, for example concerning the combustion coordination, the injection, the electronics or the turbocharging. In all cases, only internal measures are being carried out in order to conform to the standards. Complex and expensive external measures such as catalytic converters are not necessary. Exhaust gas recirculation is currently also not necessary.

Ten engine series between 40 and 3,650 bhp (20 and 2,700 kW)

DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway supplies a complete and consistent range of diesel engines for industrial uses. Manufacturers of construction machines, industrial and mining vehicles can choose from ten different engine series with outputs between 40 to 3,650 bhp (30 and 2,720 kW). Depending on application, utilization and constructional requirements of the vehicle, the various series are currently available with the following engine outputs:

number of cylinders Power (bhp) Capacity (kW)
D700 3, 4, 6 40 - 130
30 - 95
SUN 2, 3, 4, 6 40 - 170
30 - 125
900 4, 6 101 - 322 75 - 240
40 6 167 - 250 125 - 190
50 6 250 - 350 186 - 260
60 6 300 - 670 224 - 496
457 6 324 - 449 242 - 335
500 6, 8 350 - 600 260 - 448

4000 8, 12, 16, 20 1,350 - 3,750 1,007 - 2,720

Beginning in 2006, the engines of the 4000 series will be available. Revised technically, they offer a number of advantages over today's engines, including an eleven percent increase in output and adaptation to the new emission specifications.
