DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway engines for agricultural machinery comply with the latest exhaust emission standards

One of DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway’s major goals is to develop engines with minimum pollutant emissions and its activities are focused on achieving most of the pollutant reduction by means of internal engine design measures. The company's philosophy is that pollutants should not be created in the first place although wherever the customer’s circumstances require it DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway also uses exhaust aftertreatment methods. DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway has identified injection, electronics and charging as the key technologies for diesel engine optimization. Combining the development activities in these three fields results in direct product benefits for the user: low fuel consumption and low emissions coupled with high performance and availability characteristics.

Engine Series 500 and 900 as well as the Series 460 engine comply with the latest EU and US exhaust emission standards

Series 500 and 900 engines, as well as the Series 460 engine, are now compliant with the emission standards EPA Tier 3 and EU III A. This was achieved by using the latest analytical simulation and test methods and thorough field trials. In addition, the camshaft and the injection and electronics systems were modified to match changes in the combustion process.

Series 500 and 900 engines and the Series 460 engine therefore do not require exhaust recirculation, exhaust cooling or exhaust aftertreatment.

High availability and long service life remain unchanged

This kind of design modification means further advantages beyond compliance with more stringent exhaust emission standards. For instance, there are extended power ranges for the Series 460 engine (up to 360 kW) and Series 500 engines (up to 480 kW). The units continue to provide the same outstanding availability and service life characteristics as before. The use of alternative fuels is possible.In agriculture, these engines power combines, forage harvesters, harvesting units and tractors. Series 900 engines deliver 75 to 240 kW (100 to 320 bhp) power, the Series 460 engines generate 220 to 360 kW (300 to 485 bhp) and Series 500 units provide 260 to 480 kW (350 to 645 bhp).
