Friedrichshafen/Detroit, 6 October 2008. Tognum’s subsidiary MTU Detroit Diesel, the leading supplier of heavy duty diesel engines to the United States Army, announced today that it will continue to support the Army’s legions of Detroit Diesel 2-cycle engines. The most concrete example of this support was evidenced last month in the form of a 2-cycle parts contract that began in September 2008 with optional extensions through 2013.
Since decades, MTU Detroit Diesel and its forerunner companies have been providing engines to the United States military. It is estimated that the U.S. Army accounts for nearly 10% of the three million 2-cycle engines that the company has produced since 1938. While the Army is currently mtu’s largest customer in terms of new 2-cycle engines, there have also been a large number of 2-cycle engines used by the Navy, Coast Guard and Marines, as well as allied nations.
mtu is also at the forefront of new development for military applications, such as the Army’s Future Combat Systems (FCS) modernization project. The company was awarded a contract for engine development to power these vehicles with its Series 890 four-cycle engine. The first pilots are now running in demonstration vehicles with many more to follow.
