Friedrichshafen, 14 October 2009. Karl Maybach, founder of the forerunner of Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen, is to be honored with a series of commemorative medals. The State Mint of Baden-Württemberg and MTU Friedrichshafen presented the series for the first time on Wednesday evening, 14 October, at mtu in Friedrichshafen at a gathering attended by personalities from the world of politics and business. Members of the Maybach family were also present at the event which formed part of mtu's centennial celebrations.

The State Mint of Baden-Württemberg issues the "Baden-Württemberg Inventors and Experimenters" medals in honor of outstanding personalities from the region whose inventions and creativity have been instrumental in bringing about technological progress. Following in the steps of Artur Fischer and Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, Karl Maybach (1879-1960) is now the third designer and inventor to be commemorated in this way.

In the words of Christof von Branconi, member of the Executive Board and COO of Tognum AG with responsibility for the Business Unit ‘Onsite Energy and Components’: "The Karl Maybach commemorative series expresses clear recognition of Karl Maybach's work and of his achievements in modern power technology. For MTU Friedrichshafen, the company originally founded by Karl Maybach and now a Tognum Group company, this acknowledgement marks yet another highlight in this year's centennial celebrations".

The medal depicts Maybach himself as well as a selection of his products and their wide-ranging applications. The artistically unique, high-relief medals were designed by the Stuttgart artist, Prof. Ulrich Böhme and were translated to the coining dies in painstaking work by the engraver, Werner Mebert. They are available in fine silver, bronze and in the standard silver-finish copper/bronze version.

Designs show a Maybach aircraft engine and various engine applications. Of special note is the version in fine gold depicting Karl Maybach and the legendary Maybach 12-cylinder automobile. Verification of the high quality of the materials used and the high-relief images is provided in the form of a certificate of authentication. Further information on the commemorative medal series and the individual medals is available at www.staatlichemuenzenbw.de
