Tognum expands genset business

• New family of mtu Onsite Energy generator sets
• Platform: mtu Series 1600, Series 2000 and Series 4000 diesel engines producing 270 to 3,250 kW
• Expansion of end-user business planned for coming years

Friedrichshafen, 2 November 2009. Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, is to introduce a new family of generator sets under its mtu Onsite Energy brand. The generator sets cover a power range from 270 to 3,250 kW and are based on mtu Series 1600, Series 2000 and Series 4000 diesel engines. “Tognum intends to use the strategic growth of its generator set business to significantly expand its potential in the end-user sector in the medium term”, said Christof von Branconi, Tognum Executive Board member responsible for the business unit Onsite Energy & Components. “In addition to increasing added value in production, Tognum will also be enhancing its service business with end users.”

Essentially, the new product family consists of engine, generator, cooling plant, plant control system and frame. A wide range of supplementary units such as soundproofing hoods, radiators and electric circuit breakers is also available to complement the basic sub-assemblies so that the customer can have his own individual generator set created from these high-quality components. For the customer, the modular concept also means an economic solution and short lead times. Typically, the generator sets are used for applications in data centers, hospitals, hotels, offices and airports where reliable emergency standby power is essential as well as for base and peak load power generation. The major markets are located in Latin America and Africa as well as in the Middle and Far East.

The generator sets are currently produced in Mankato, Minnesota, USA and future production is also scheduled for Magdeburg, Germany, and Suzhou, China. In 2007, Tognum acquired Katolight Corporation in the USA in order to expand Tognum’s existing generator set business. The Tognum subsidiary, which was renamed ‘mtu Onsite Energy Corporation’ in 2008, has a solid sales network as well as decades of manufacturing experience in North America. Since acquiring the company, Tognum has optimized the product portfolio and the production processes and has developed a modular product program.

In the future, mtu Onsite Energy’s diesel-based sales program will range from individual diesel engines for power generation through to modularized generator sets and highly complex special-purpose applications such as project systems involving emergency generator sets for nuclear power plants.
