104 young professionals start out with Rolls-Royce Power Systems around the world

• 74 apprentices and dual students begin courses at Friedrichshafen location
• Focus on digitalization and electrification. Specialist IT training courses from 2019
• The countdown is running. Application deadline for next year’s courses runs out in September

104 young people around the world are currently embarking on vocational training courses with Rolls-Royce Power Systems. 74 of them are in Friedrichshafen. “We look forward to welcoming all the apprentices and dual studies students who are about to start out on an exciting new chapter in their lives. They can expect state-of-the-art courses tailored to meet the product profiles our customers need. We have been providing young people with outstanding vocational training for almost 100 years now,” said Marcus A. Wassenberg, CHRO at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The latest wide-ranging program of apprenticeships covers eleven technical and commercial job profiles with the company also offering dual studies courses in four areas: engineering, business engineering, electro-technology and business administration with an industrial specialism. As a leading provider of drive and power solutions, RRPS is reflecting the growing importance of digitalization and electrification by introducing new vocational profiles and as from the coming year, the company’s training program will include eight additional apprenticeship and dual studies placements for IT specialists. “We want to train the qualified specialists we will need tomorrow ourselves. That’s why we offer our trainees an attractive and agile learning environment with jobs involving responsibility as well as interesting future prospects,” said Patrick Müller, who heads HR for Power Systems in Germany. “At a time when there is a real shortage of specialists, training the workforce of tomorrow is exactly what our future-oriented company should be doing. That’s why our Works Council supports this year’s increase in the number of training places and welcomes the company’s decision in favor of a further increase next year,” declared Chairman of the Works Council, Thomas Bittelmeyer.

Training around the world

Among the 74 young men and women who started their training in Friedrichshafen on September 3, are two refugees who gained their apprenticeship placements after completing a seven-month initial professional entry qualification. The biggest group of apprentices consists of 20 industrial mechanics, followed by 10 mechatronics apprentices and six electronics trainees specializing in automation technology. 18 students will be starting their dual studies courses at Rolls-Royce Power Systems on October 1. The biggest grouping here is made up of nine mechanical engineers with four electro-technicians in the second largest group.

Two mechatronics specialists, one industrial business management assistant and a specialist in warehouse logistics began courses at mtu Onsite Energy in Ruhstorf in September. Two industrial management assistants have embarked on courses at the Augsburg location where a further trainee transferred from a different training center in the second year of the course. MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg is training two industrial mechanics.

In August, 12 young men and women began training at Norwegian subsidiary Bergen Engines on courses ranging from CNC operator and industrial mechanic to logistics and automation specialists. Over the next few weeks, six trainees will begin apprenticeships at mtu America in Aiken and three will be starting out on the ‘Youth Employment Acceleration Program’ (YEAP) at the location in Mankato, USA.
