mtu Series 500 highlights

Gas engine

Improved combustion technology increases engine efficiency and lowers fuel costs.

Generator

Optimally tailored to the engine, the generator provides best-in-class reliability and efficiency.

Ignition system

A microprocessor-controlled ignition system optimally adjusts the ignition time and ignition energy to the quality of the gas.

Mixture cooler

The two-stage mixture cooler improves engine performance and heat utilization.

Digital connectivity

The system can be equipped with a data logger providing access to our digital solutions, including remote monitoring, fast and reliable service support and, soon, further features such as predictive failure prevention and operational optimization.

mtu Module Control (MMC)

If the gas engine is the heart of the genset, then the mtu Module Control is the brain. Housed in a separate panel next to the genset, the MMC automation system handles all important functions needed for continuously monitoring and controlling the entire system.

Flexible heat recovery unit

This unit ensures highest thermal efficiencies for the jacket water, lube oil and coolant mixture. (Expanded scope of supply / GR configuration)

Exhaust heat recovery

The exhaust heat recovery system with exhaust heat exchanger achieves highest thermal efficiencies in CHP systems. With the mtu 12V500 GS version, the exhaust heat exchanger is supplied separately. (Expanded scope of supply / GC configuration)

Green hydrogen – the fuel of the future

Renewable energy sources will play a pivotal role for the power supply of the future, particularly from sources like the sun and the wind. Hydrogen produced from renewables by means of electrolysis is referred to as “green” hydrogen. Hydrogen generated in this way can be used as a climate-neutral fuel by modern gas engines, which convert it into electricity in a highly efficient manner. The waste heat can be used for heating and cooling. Our new Series 500 natural gas systems can be upgraded to run on green hydrogen.

Benefits:

Applications flexibility

The highly adaptable mtu Module Control (MCC) automation system enables genset integration with diverse applications, even with complex systems such as microgrids.

Modular design

With our modular products and individualized scope of delivery, we can offer clients tailored solutions for all types of power generation applications – from pure gensets to complex CHP plants.

Global service support

All units are fully integrated with the mtu service landscape and supported by our global service network.

Low OPEX

42.6% genset power efficiency is “best in class” for this power segment, allowing for significantly lower operating costs.

Comprehensive integration

Intelligently integrated hybrid and microgrid solutions that maximize operating cost savings have made us a highly sought-after solutions provider.

Low emissions

Highly efficient combustion technology results in consistently low emissions.

Heat and power for malt producer Durst Malz: "Ideal application area for a CHP plant"

20 February 2017

A malt house has an extremely high demand for energy – both electrical and thermal. For this reason, the German malt producer, Durst Malz, has been operating two combined heat and power (CHP) plants from mtu at its location in Gernsheim since July 2011 that can do both simultaneously. The type GC 357 N5 CHP plants deliver around one megawatt of heat, which is used to dry the malt. The approximately 700 kilowatts of electrical energy, which the plants generate in addition to the thermal energy, are fed into the company’s own grid, resulting in an overall efficiency level of almost 90 per cent. Two identical plants have also been installed at the Durst Malz location in Bruchsal-Heidelsheim.
