mtu Series 8000 - Innovation in Marine Engineering

For 25 years, the mtu Series 8000 engine has set the standard in marine propulsion, exemplifying power, performance, and reliability. This engine is celebrated for its ability to drive a diverse range of vessels, including high-speed ferries, naval ships, and luxury yachts. Engineered to meet the demanding needs of maritime operations, it offers exceptional power density and dependable performance. Throughout the last 25 years, the Series 8000 has enhanced its reputation for excellence. We invite you to join us in celebrating this remarkable journey. Explore the history and achievements of the mtu Series 8000 and discover how we are shaping the future of maritime power.

A Legacy of Excellence

The mtu Series 8000 was introduced to meet the demanding needs of maritime industry, offering high power output and exceptional efficiency. Over the last 25 years the mtu Series 8000 has already impressively provided proof of its reliability, with over 350 engines of this type delivered, accumulating together more than 3,000,000 operating hours and in numerous missions. The compact propulsion engine impresses with its outstanding  power-to-weight ratio and unlimited low load operation.

Power and Performance

With power outputs reaching up to 10,000 kW and with its best power-to-weight ratio in class, the mtu Series 8000 delivers the robust performance required for the most challenging maritime applications, like fast ferries, frigates or mega yachts – providing economically efficient, diesel-based propulsion solutions capable of producing up to 40 MW per vessel.

Reliability and availability

In 2013, the 20V 8000 engine received Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) after 1,500 hours of rigorous testing, which included extensive operation at 110 % of the engine’s rated power under various extreme environmental conditions.

Known for its durability, the mtu Series 8000 ensures long service life (long TBO – time between overhaul and dependable operation, even in the harshest environments).

Technical excellence

mtu Series 8000 offers the well-known Power Unit, where the cylinder head, liner, connecting rod, and piston form a single assembly for streamlined installation and in-situ servicing. A standout feature in this power class is also the common-rail injection system, successfully used in the Series 4000.

With a main pressure of 27.3 bar at peak performance, the Series 8000 achieves unprecedented single-stage performance levels, enabled by high-performance turbochargers and sequential charging.

Emission control

We offer mtu Series 8000 large engines equipped with an SCR system to meet IMO Tier III emission requirements. This enables ship operators to enter the Emission Control Areas (ECA), for example in the Baltic and North Sea and off the North American coast.

In addition, these mtu engines are approved for operation with sustainable fuels (EN15940, e.g. HVO).

mtu NautIQ Foresight: FLEET & HEALTH MANAGEMENT

mtu NautIQ Foresight is a Fleet & Health Management System. It allows you to monitor and have full control over the technical condition of your vessels from bridge to propeller. It provides support for the maintenance and upkeep 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and thus helps minimize vessel downtime. With mtu NautIQ Foresight you can collect and analyze data from mtu systems and third-party key components on the vessel, considering additional factors, such as navigational data.
