The first parallel hybrid drive system for heavy tracked vehicles, delivering more than 1,400 kW for future combat platforms.

The mtu PowerPack Xelerate, developed by Rolls-Royce Power Systems, sets a new benchmark in military propulsion systems. Combining a proven mtu Series 199 engine with advanced electrification, it delivers superior performance, efficiency and operational flexibility for next-generation land defense systems.

A New Standard in Hybrid Military Propulsion

The mtu PowerPack Xelerate is designed for the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), Europe’s next-generation combat vehicle program. As a fully integrated hybrid military propulsion system, it combines mechanical and electrical power in a parallel architecture to meet the growing demands of modern warfare.

With a system output exceeding 1,400 kW, this advanced combat vehicle engine solution delivers high power density, improved energy efficiency and enhanced operational performance. Built on the proven mtu Series 199 platform, the PowerPack ensures reliability, scalability and long-term operational readiness for defense applications.

Key Benefits of the mtu PowerPack Xelerate

Enhanced Mobility and Maneuverability

The hybrid drive system improves vehicle agility and responsiveness. Electrified steering and boost functions enable precise control and superior performance in complex operational environments.

High-Efficiency Hybrid Technology

The combination of advanced engine technology, hybrid architecture and energy recuperation reduces fuel consumption and increases overall system efficiency.

Power for Future Combat Systems

With over 1,400 kW of system output, the mtu PowerPack Xelerate supports high electrical loads required by modern combat vehicles, including sensors, communication systems and digital battlefield technologies.

Proven Reliability with mtu Series 199

The system is based on the mtu Series 199 engine platform, with thousands of units in operation worldwide. This ensures robust performance, durability and mission readiness under extreme conditions.

Compact and Scalable Powerpack Design

The mtu PowerPack Xelerate offers a space-saving and weight-optimized design, enabling flexible integration into various combat vehicle platforms.

Reduced Operational Complexity

Integrated system architecture and advanced control systems simplify operation and improve efficiency for vehicle crews.

Hybrid Power Meets Proven Engine Technology

At the heart of the mtu PowerPack Xelerate is a newly developed 10-cylinder mtu Series 199 engine. Delivering approximately 1,100 kW of mechanical power, it provides the core energy for the hybrid propulsion system.

Designed for military applications, the engine features high robustness, multi-fuel capability and optimized performance under dynamic load conditions. Its advanced combustion system ensures efficiency and reliability in demanding environments. For the first time, this combat vehicle engine operates within a parallel hybrid system for heavy tracked vehicles, enabling seamless interaction between mechanical and electrical power.

Advanced Hybrid Drive System for Tracked Vehicles

The mtu PowerPack Xelerate integrates an electrified powershift steering transmission, enabling continuous steering control and improved energy management. The hybrid system allows for energy recuperation and boost functionality, increasing both performance and efficiency.

A hybrid cooling system further enhances thermal management and supports the integration of high-power electrical components. This innovative hybrid drive system is designed to meet the evolving requirements of future combat vehicles, including higher energy demand and increased operational flexibility.

Designed for the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS)

The Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) is a joint European initiative to develop a next-generation combat vehicle, replacing existing main battle tanks. The platform is designed to deliver enhanced mobility, survivability and digital integration.

The mtu PowerPack Xelerate provides the propulsion backbone for this advanced system, enabling higher performance and supporting the increasing energy demands of modern military operations.

A Strong European Defense Partnership

Rolls-Royce Power Systems acts as the general contractor for Drive System of the MGCS, delivering a fully integrated propulsion solution. In collaboration with ZF, a leading technology partner, the system combines deep engineering expertise with proven implementation capabilities.

This partnership ensures a reliable, scalable and future-ready solution for European defense programs.
