The Heart of the Wolf
At the heart of General Dynamics Land Systems’ Wolf XM30 is the compact and proven mtu 8V 199. Built for the demanding requirements of modern military operations, it delivers the reliability, mobility and future-ready performance required of a contender to replace the U.S. Army’s M2 Bradley.
Set to meet the demands of tomorrow
The U.S. Army has begun the final selection process for the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle, which will replace the M2 Bradley and shape the next generation of armored combat. Prototype vehicles will undergo extensive testing and evaluation by Soldiers and Army specialists before a final design is selected for production.
The XM30 is intended to deliver a transformational leap in lethality, mobility, efficiency, Soldier and vehicle survivability, and long-term upgradeability. Planned capabilities include a two-Soldier crew with space for six infantry Soldiers, a remotely operated turret, a 50 mm cannon, and a hybrid-electric powertrain. Its modular open systems architecture is designed to enable the rapid integration of new hardware, software, and other technologies as battlefield requirements evolve.
The XM30 is therefore more than an incremental upgrade to the Bradley: it is a future-ready platform designed for the Army of 2030 and beyond. Delivering these capabilities requires compact, reliable, and highly efficient power at the heart of the vehicle - starting with the engine.
An engine designed for power: mtu 8V 199
The engine is the heart of a military vehicle. Its reliability is essential not only to mission success, but also to protecting the crew and equipment.
At the heart of the GDLS Wolf XM30 is the compact and proven mtu 8V 199. Designed for the most demanding military operations, it provides the performance, reliability and uncompromising mobility required on tomorrow’s battlefield. Its future-ready architecture also offers the flexibility to adapt as operational requirements and mission demands evolve.
The mtu 8V 199 key facts
The most powerful addition to a successful family
The mtu 8V 199 builds on the proven heritage of the mtu Series 199, a trusted propulsion platform used in military vehicles across NATO countries.
As part of a scalable family comprising 6V, 8V, 10V and 12V configurations, it shares a common technological foundation designed to simplify integration, maintenance, training and spare-parts management. This modular approach enables the Series 199 to support a wide range of vehicle concepts: from new platforms to the modernization of existing fleets.
The mtu PowerPack Xelerate takes this approach one step further. It demonstrates Rolls-Royce’s ability to develop and integrate complete propulsion systems that combine the engine with additional drivetrain components and advanced technologies in a compact, tailored solution.
For the GDLS Wolf XM30, the mtu 8V 199 combines the established track record of the Series 199 with a compact, future-ready design-backed by the expertise to deliver not only engines, but complete drive-system solutions for evolving military requirements.
Made in the US for the US
If the GDLS Wolf is selected for the XM30 program, Rolls-Royce plans to manufacture the mtu 8V 199 engines for the program at its facility in Aiken, South Carolina.
Since opening in 2010, the Aiken site has grown from an engine assembly plant into one of Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ key U.S. facilities for mtu engine manufacturing, machining, research and development, testing, remanufacturing, and overhaul. Its capabilities now span the entire engine lifecycle from initial production to long-term service and support.
Manufacturing the mtu 8V 199 in Aiken would unite proven mtu propulsion technology with skilled American manufacturing and in-country lifecycle support. It would strengthen domestic production capabilities and provide the U.S. Army with a reliable, long-term propulsion partner throughout the engine’s service life.
