The new mtu 16V 2000 Common Rail engine: In a class of its own

MTU Friedrichshafen, the market leader in engines for yachts above 80 feet in length, is expanding its program for the yacht industry. Following the introduction of 8 and 10 cylinder versions of the Series 2000 Common Rail engine in 2004, mtu has now presented its top-of-the-range model, the 16 cylinder version, at the Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes. The engine’s European premiere coincides with its sales debut in September along with a 12 cylinder version.The Series 2000 Common Rail has excited extremely enthusiastic reactions on the market and more than 1000 engines in this series have already been ordered.

Delivering 2400hp and weighing in at under 3.4 tons, the 16V 2000 Common Rail boasts a remarkable power-weight ratio of 0.71 hp/kg, placing it in a new performance class. It is unique in this sector. In the 2000+hp yacht engine class its closest competitor weighs 6.5 tons and produces 2250hp giving it a power-weight ratio of 0.34 hp/kg - barely half of what the new mtu engine achieves.

Its lightweight construction makes the 16V 2000 Common Rail ideal for high-speed craft between 80 and 120 feet in length. Conventional 80-foot vessels fitted with two mtu engines can reach speeds of over 50 knots. Even conventional 100-foot boats achieve speeds above 40 knots with two of these mtu propulsion units. The mtu 12V 2000 Common Rail engine which generates 1800hp is also new. At only 2.8 tons, this engine is also at the top of its class with regard to power-weight ratio. The 12V is primarily intended for 60 to 100-foot cruising and sport-fishing yachts.

Market leader with ground-breaking technology in the 2000 hp range

A comparison with competing 2000+hp yacht engines makes it abundantly clear that the new 12V and 16V mtu engines are world leaders as regards power-weight and power-size performance. The dimensions of the two engines are also unique, requiring significantly less installation space than competitors’ engines. The saving on space and weight obviously means more room on-board – for more people and a greater range of fittings. The engine’s weight advantage also means that more fuel can be taken aboard thus increasing cruising range. The increases in power and compactness do not, however, mean increased fuel consumption. With consumption figures around 210 g/kWh, both engines have extremely long cruising ranges.

A comparison of the new 16V 2000 Common Rail with the previous 16V-2000- engines which have set the pace for yacht engines over the last eight years, reveals distinct developments in ground-breaking technology: The new engines are 20 % more powerful than their predecessors whilst still managing to log a 6 % improvement in fuel consumption.
