  • Strong growth of Tognum subsidiary mtu requires central logistics center for production
  • Investment of nearly €30 million
  • Transfer of logistics for series engines frees up new space for production

The Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen has received the go-ahead from the Salem municipal council to plan a new logistics center in the Neufrach industrial park. The logistics center will be built on a plot of land with an area of approximately 65,000 square meters with the possibility to expand by an additional 22,000 square meters, and will supply the two plants in Friedrichshafen with production material as well as storing complete engines until they are delivered. With this investment of nearly €30 million, Tognum is preparing for the anticipated strong growth of the coming years. The logistics center is scheduled to go into operation in the spring of 2009.

The transfer of production logistics will make an additional 6,000 to 7,000 square meters available for production and assembly in Friedrichshafen, allowing further increases in production output.
A piece of land was found in Salem where the logistics operations can be concentrated under one roof in the future. Gerd-Michael Wolters, Tognum’s Executive Board Member for the mtu Engines division, emphasized the main reason for the central logistics center: “With the new logistics center, we will be able to significantly accelerate the strong growth of our company by means of more efficient just-in-time supplies for our production plants.”

The first stage of construction on the 65,000 square-meter lot will be to build a hall with a floor area of approximately 35,000 square meters and a roofed-over external storage area for unfinished parts and empty containers of some 7,000 square meters.
