  • More performance to satisfy higher customer demands
  • Engines to be used in regional trains in Poland

The Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen has received an order from the Polish train manufacturer PESA Bydgoszcz SA to supply underfloor diesel engine systems. By the middle of 2008, mtu will supply a total of 60 units to PESA. These so-called PowerPacks of the type 6H 1800 R48P deliver a power output of 390 kW (530 hp).

The compact PowerPacks have been on the market for three years and more than 3,500 of them have been sold worldwide during that time. With the latest generation as sold to PESA, mtu offers solutions for rail operators’ increased demands. Longer trains with higher speeds and shorter stops need more compact underfloor diesel engine systems with even more power than before.

Compact power with 315-390 kW (428-530 hp)

The Tognum subsidiary mtu supplies its PowerPacks with diesel-mechanical, diesel-electric and diesel-hydraulic drive. The PowerPack integrates all of the main components on one frame. The customer receives a complete, coordinated propulsion system comprising the diesel engine, all subgroups including the transmission; fuel, oil and air filters; the exhaust muffler; and the entire cooling system with hydro-pump, electric motors and cooling fan. The system also integrates the compressor for the brake system, the generator for power supply on board the train, and as an option the compressor for the air-conditioning system. The compact and modular construction has the advantage of low total weight and allows easy removal and refitting for maintenance purposes. This means that the PowerPacks are ideal as underfloor drive systems for railcars and push-pull trains.

mtu PowerPacks available with particulate filters as an option

As an option, mtu PowerPacks can be supplied with soot-particulate filters, which do not require any additional fitting space. With these filters, the PowerPacks already fulfill the EU emission limits that are due to come into force in 2012.
