Friedrichshafen, 7 October 2008. The Tognum business unit Engines has been awarded a contract for the delivery of 130 diesel engines 8V 4000 R43 by locomotive manufacturer Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co. KG in Kiel/Germany. The engines with a power output of 1,000 kW (1,360 HP) will be integrated by Voith in their Gravita 10BB shunting locomotives, which will be operated by Deutsche Bahn.

The new generation of rail engines from mtu’s Series 4000 complies with the tightened restrictions of EU emission stage IIIA, which will apply as of January 2009. The limits for nitrous oxides (NOx) will decrease from their current maximum value of 9.5 g/kWh to a future maximum of 6.0 g/kWh. mtu rail engines even fall below this value simply by way of internal engine design. Particulate emissions also decrease significantly thanks to the new balanced combustion process featured by Series 4000 rail engines.

The diesel-hydraulic Gravita 10BB locomotive will be utilized by DB Schenker Rail as Series 260 in freight traffic and will gradually replace the V90 from 2010. At a weight of 80 tons and a maximum speed of 100 km/h, the Gravitas will be used for heavy shunting duties and light haulage service. The predecessor model 8V 4000 R41 is currently being reliably utilized in more than 370 heavy Deutsche Bahn shunting locos.
