SINGAPORE – Employees and guests, including senior representatives from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and Ministry of Defence, gathered at Singapore Technologies Marine (ST Marine) to witness the launching of the RSN’s newest vessel, Independence, by Mrs Ivy Ng, wife of Singapore’s Minister for Defence. This is the first of the series of eight new patrol vessels currently under construction in ST Marine for the RSN since June 2014.

All eight Littoral Mission Vessels (LMV) will be powered by mtu Series 4000 diesel engines. Each LMV will be equipped with four of these engines, known for their low consumption and long service life, with each unit producing 4300kW (5766bhp) at 2100 rpm. mtu Series 4000 diesel engines offer unrivalled power density in terms of volume-to power ratio and power-to-weight ratio. The mtu brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems within the Land & Sea division of Rolls-Royce.

The LMV is 80m in length with a full displacement of 1250 tonnes and can operate to a maximum range of 3500 nautical mile (6,475 kilometer) with top speeds in excess of 27 knots (13.89mps). These LMVs are versatile and are designed to undertake a wide range of maritime security operations and missions to safeguard vital sea lines of communications. Adopting the concept of “mission modularity”, these vessels are highly configurable and can be equipped with a range of mission modules to meet the specific mission needs.

As a pioneer in the marine engine industry, mtu has been supplying high performance engines to Asia and global customers for over 100 years and has become a preferred supplier of coast guards and navies around the world.
