The more specific and complex the demands, the more important and valuable expertise and experience are. For decades, we have been setting quality and performance standards for submarine technology.

Submarines are an indispensable component of nearly every fleet, taking on a number of tasks – from protecting territorial waters to gathering information on an international scale. Few manufacturers are in the position to fulfill the extremely high technical demands that are placed on submarine systems and engines. As a trusted partner of shipyards, ship designers and Navies, we  have been optimising battery charging units for conventional submarines for decades. In fact, most conventional submarines around the world use mtu engines.

Our newly developed charging unit - based on the mtu Series 12V 4000 - addresses advanced submarine system requirements  by improving and enhancing the characteristics of our world leading legacy submarine engine.  The standard battery charging unit can easiliy be customised with project specific generators and mounting system for indivdual shock, acoustic and other Naval requirements – including magnetic signature reduction.

A pedigree of success

Submarines have been powered by mtu diesel engines for more than 50 years.

20+ Naval Fleets

Globally, over 20 naval forces have equipped their submarine fleets with mtu diesel engines.

Preferred Partner

For many of these customers, we are also the preferred partner for the development of the battery charging units for their submarines.

Conventional & Nuclear

Applications include both conventional and nuclear submarines.

Over 70 years of experience

In these years so many submarine engines have been successfully supplied of which many are still in operation in todays submarine fleets.

The next fully qualified evolution.

In 2009, our partnership-based corporate strategy resulted in the development of the current generation of submarine engines – based on the successful series 4000 engine family. The mtu series 4000 engines have proven to be extremely reliable in various commercial and naval applications for over 25years. This vast field experience in combination with our product improvement processes ensure continuous technology improvements over the entire product life cycle.

Encapsulation

Sound encapsulation and engine mountings for marine engines involves the strategic implementation of soundproofing materials and design modifications to reduce noise emissions from the engine compartment. This process aims to contain the noise at its source, preventing it from escaping and propagating through the water and surrounding environment. Depending on the application different targets can be achieved such as raised passenger comfort in yachts to enhanced tactical advantages for frigates based on the lower noise levels. mtu engines can optional be equipped with enhanced mounting and sound encapsulation technologies and contracted sound levels via our internal engineering experts.

Demagnetization

We are a leader in the field of propulsion systems with low magnetic and acoustic signatures, allowing us to reduce the magnetism of all ferromagnetic parts with our own method to a stable minimum.

Mounting

Our engines and gensets are installed on special rubber mountings to reduce the transmission of structure-borne noise to the ship’s hull. New active mountings support the passive rubber mountings and make their noise reduction far more effective.

The requirements define the solutions.

The demands are exceptional. mtu high-precision technical solutions meet them.

Thanks to decades of extensive expertise in off-highway applications, combined with the current results of our in-house research, we are uniquely capable of tailoring our products and services to meet our customers’ needs.

We always start with precise analyses. The solutions we offer are therefore tightly focused on the demands of the customers.

Our tailor-made technologies and products are backed by full life-cycle support and cover the full range of tasks that submarines have to perform.

The requirements placed on submarine propulsion systems for shock resistance, signatures and acoustics are particularly high. The solutions developed, produced and supported by our experienced specialists meet these high demands – without compromise.
