mtu broadens Marine Business with Gas Turbines

Agreement signed with Vericor Power Systems for TF40 and TF50 Gas Turbines

Friedrichshafen. MTU Friedrichshafen and Vericor Power Systems have signed an agreement, whereby mtu will package and distribute Vericor's TF™40 and TF™50 aeroderivative marine gas turbines. Both engines can be incorporated into a variety of flexible propulsion system arrangements. For example, TF marine gas turbines can be used for stand alone power plants or combined with diesels to form COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG), COmbined Diesel Or Gas turbine (CODOG) or COmbined Gas or Gas turbine configurations (COGAG). The TF40 is rated from up to 4,600 shaft horsepower (shp)/ 3,431 kW and the TF50 provides up to 5,600 shp/4,177 kW.

"As one of the world's leading manufacturers of large diesel engines and complete propulsion systems, mtu is now even better positioned to offer our customers a greater variety of products and services," said Peter Grosch, Executive Vice President of MTU Friedrichshafen and Vice President Sales of DaimlerChrysler Powersystems Off-Highway.

"The matching of mtu's diesel engines with Vericor's TF gas turbines will be ideal for those marine customers looking for the design and operational flexibility of CODAG or CODOG propulsion systems in yachts, ferries and patrol boats," Grosch added.

The agreement is favourable for Vericor Power Systems, too. "We are fortunate to be able to tap into mtu's established and proven worldwide distribution network," said Tom Bray, President and General Manager of Vericor Power Systems. "We are confident that this new agreement with mtu will be beneficial to Vericor's foreign military and global commercial marine customers."

Supplier Agreement extended for General Electric Gas Turbines

mtu also extended its successful marine supplier agreement with General Electric Marine Engines, part of GE Aircraft Engines. The agrement which orginally dates back to the early 1970's covers mtu's packaging and distribution of propulsion systems incorporating the GE marine gas turbines LM500, LM1600, LM2500, LM2500+ and LM6000 together with the complete line of MTU Friedrichshafen diesels.

The marine LM engines cover a power range from 4,500 kW to 42,700 kW and are the recognized marine engine market leaders in their power ranges. Around 1100 of these engines are presently operating in ships worldwide. mtu has been packaging GE gas turbines for mechanical and electric, combined propulsion systems into commercial and military ships for many years. Thus, mtu has equipped surface combatants and patrol vessels as well as commercial vessels like yachts, fast ferries, cruise ships, LNG carriers and a range of specialized vessels.
