Energy Transition at Power Systems

Helping the world do things tomorrow that cannot be done today and playing our part in the energy transition for a more sustainable world.

Our way to Energy Transition

As a leading power systems provider, we have a fundamental role in meeting environmental and societal opportunities and challenges that
the world faces. We are committed to:
Playing our part in the energy transition helping the world do things tomorrow that cannot be done today. Operating ethically – living our behaviours in accordance with our Group policies. Being socially responsible – creating a positive impact for our people and stakeholders.

  • Creating a high-performing, competitive, resilient and growing Rolls-Royce, allows us to successfully develop and deliver the products that will support our customers through the energy transition.
  • To make sure our business and the sectors we operate in can be compatible with this future, we’re targeting net zero emissions for our operations and facilities as well as our products and technologies by 2050.
  • Reduction of Scope 1 & 2 emissions at Power Systems by 46% in line with Rolls-Royce Group ambition by 2030.

e-Fuels for climate-friendly data centers Rolls-Royce Power Systems and INERATEC
launch partnership

Rolls-Royce Power Systems and INERATEC, a leading manufacturer of Power-to-X plants and climate-neutral e-Fuels, have formed a strategic partnership to decarbonize backup power for data centers. Their goal: to replace fossil diesel in emergency power systems with synthetic fuels produced from renewable hydrogen and CO2. The collaboration opens up a new and largely overlooked use case for e-Fuels in the digitalage—powering critical infrastructure in an increasingly AI-driven world.

2030

Reduction of scope 1 & 2 emissions at Power Systems by 46% in line with Rolls-Royce Group ambition

2050

To make sure our business and the sectors we operate in can be compatible with this future, we’re targeting net zero emissions for our operations and facilities as well as our products and technologies by 2050.

Our goal: Energy- and resource-efficient production

Not only are our products becoming increasingly energy- and resource-efficient, but also our production and our value creation chain. We achieve this through the expansion of photovoltaic systems, the increased use of combined heat and power plants, e-mobility and energy efficiency projects. But this is just the beginning.  Our target: reduction of Scope 1 & 2 emissions at Power Systems by 46% inline with Rolls-Royce Group ambition by 2030. To do so will involve scrutinizing not only our own production processes and test stands, but also the unfinished products we buy, and the deployment of our products on customer sites.

We're ready to go – join us on the journey

There was never a more exciting time in the field of energy, drives and marine propulsion. Even today, we offer products that generate significantly lower or virtually zero C02 emissions – mtu Hybrid PowerPacks for rail applications, for example. We are also working on mtu hybrid propulsion for marine applications. In 2018, we began producing mtu battery energy storage systems the size of freight containers that do not generate C02 emissions during operation and store electrical energy from renewable sources. Battery energy storage systems can also be integrated with microgrids and smartly connected with renewable energy systems or diesel and gas-powered generator sets, thus contributing to sustainable, off-grid power generation. The future has already begun. From now on, it's all about pulling together and continuing on this path. We look forward to working not only with our customers and partners, but with policymakers to create the conditions that will make the energy-turnaround reality.
