Friedrichshafen, 2 July 2010. Tognum subsidiary mtu  Friedrichshafen GmbH is to supply more than 100  Powerpacks to Metrowagonmash (МЕТРОВАГОНМАШ). The Russian train manufacturer belongs to Transmashholding whose manufacturing program includes subway trains and locomotives. The mtu brand underfloor diesel drives will be delivered between 2011 and 2013. Around 90 of the  Powerpacks are earmarked for local service routes operated by the state-owned Russian Railways.

mtu has maintained a presence in the Russian marketplace as a supplier of diesel-powered underfloor drive modules since 2001. “We are currently the only manufacturer of repute producing power packs in any significant quantity for wide-gauge rail systems such as those in Russia, Ukraine and Lithuania,” explained Rainer Breidenbach, member of the executive board of Tognum AG with responsibility for the business unit Engines. “The drive concept is tailor-made to match the rail vehicles produced there and it meets rail operators’ demands for high performance, exceptional reliability, and efficient fuel consumption.”

So far, more than 300  mtu Powerpacks with a combined total of more than 1.8 million hours of operation in trains have proved their quality in the demanding climatic and geographical conditions prevailing in various Russian regions.

Since market introduction in 1996, mtu has supplied more than 4,000  Powerpacks worldwide. Their modular design means that they can be individually modified to suit virtually any of the standard vehicle types. The customer gets a complete, fully integrated drive system. Depending on requirements, a 6-cylinder Model 6H  1800  mtu  engine delivers between 315 and 390 kW.

Their extremely shallow design means mtu Powerpacks are perfectly suited for underfloor operation in railcars. Fuel efficiency is another reason why Metrowagonmash chooses them for the railcars it builds for its customers. Their excellent acceleration, low life-cycle costs and low noise and vibration levels are further decisive factors in that choice and their compact, modular design reduces the weight of the drive plant overall. Powerpacks can be easily removed and re-fitted for maintenance and the low number of interfaces makes them ideal for standardization – an advantage which means real cost savings for train manufacturers such as Metrowagonmash and their customers.
