FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY – Rolls-Royce is to deliver the 1,000th mtu Series 1800 PowerPack designed to meet EU Stage IIIB emissions standards to railcar manufacturer Alstom. The PowerPacks are used to drive Coradia Lint railcars. The delivery of the 1,000th PowerPack is part of a new order that has now been awarded to mtu: Alstom has ordered a total of 174 mtu Series 1800 PowerPacks with a rated output of 390 kW for new projects in Augsburg and for the Saxony-Anhalt diesel network (DISA). They are scheduled for delivery in 2017 and 2018. The mtu brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
Jürgen Blassmann, Head of Rail Business and Base Engineering mtu Engines: “The fact that Alstom has already ordered over 1,000 PowerPacks from mtu with this order is evidence of our close cooperation and the enormous trust and confidence the railcar manufacturer places in our products.” Aaron Haußmann, Senior Manager Global Sales Rail, said: “We are proud of this long and successful partnership and look forward to many more joint projects in the future.” The mtu Series 1800 PowerPacks, as a result of their SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment system, are extremely environmentally friendly, since NOx emissions are significantly reduced. In addition, internal engine technology reduces particulate emissions by around 90 per cent compared with engines meeting the previous EU Stage IIIA emission regulations.
There are several different versions of the Coradia Lint railcar available. All diesel-powered railcars in the Lint vehicle family are driven by mtu PowerPacks. The current Lint 41, 54 and 81 vehicles are fitted with two, three and four mtu drive units respectively. These underfloor drive systems are based on horizontally mounted 6-cylinder mtu Series 1800 in-line engines. mtu Series 183 engines were used in earlier Lint vehicles.
