New 10-cylinder for yachts

The focus at the Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes and the Salone Nautico in Genoa will be on the new cylinder version of the mtu Series 2000 M96 engine.

Knut Müller, Head of the Marine and Government Business Division at mtu, commenting on the new engine, said: "With the launch of mtu’s s 10V Series 2000 M96 engine, the company is continuing a long tradition of building reliable and efficient high-performance engines for yachts. Our sales expectations for the 12V and 16V versions of this engine type in the 1,268 to 1,939 kW power range this year were significantly exceeded – we are now offering a 10 cylinder version with outputs above 1,015 kW. It is an ideal extension to our yacht engine portfolio."

The mtu engine meets U.S. EPA Marine Tier 3 Recreational standards in addition to EU Directive RCD II for leisure craft, which becomes mandatory from January 2017, and features outstanding acceleration behaviour and low fuel consumption. The Series 2000 yacht engines are a preferred choice of shipyards throughout Europe: to date, over 16,000 Series 2000 engines have been sold for marine applications.

mtu propulsion systems for megayachts

At the Monaco Yacht Show from 28 September to 1 October, mtu will also be showing the latest generation of the mtu Series 4000 engines, which meet IMO Tier III emission standards, in addition to a model of the 20V Series 4000 M93 engine.

The first IMO Tier III compatible yacht propulsion system, consisting of two mtu 16V Series 4000 M73R engines, is to be installed in a new 80.1 metre long megayacht, which is currently being built by the Bilgin Yachts shipyard in Istanbul. This will be the largest yacht ever built in Turkey. Its delivery is scheduled for 2019.

20 years ago the Series 4000 was introduced into the market and has gone on to become mtu’s biggest selling engine in production. To date, over 37,000 Series 4000 engines have been sold to customers across the world for a wide variety of applications from marine propulsion and energy generation to off-highway vehicles, and have successfully completed over 180 million operating hours.

System engineering solutions from a single source

mtu supplies propulsion systems for yachts and complete system engineering solutions from a single source. Shipyards are frequently supplied with an mtu system consisting of an engine and transmission unit with optimally synchronised interfaces that is monitored and controlled completely by the mtu automation system. For yachts, in addition to the main propulsion engines and transmission systems in the power range extending from 261 to 4,300 kW, mtu also offers gensets for the yacht’s on-board power supply with rated outputs of up to 280, in addition to gensets for the emergency power supply.
