31 apprentice trainees have successfully completed their vocational training at Rolls-Royce Power Systems in Friedrichshafen this summer, with two of them receiving a special award for their prowess: mechatronics technician Benedikt Strasser and warehouse operative Chris Reiner were chosen for the award by the Lake Constance & Upper Swabia Chamber of Trade & Industry. Benedikt is due to join the Electrical Design department, and Chris will start his career in Equipment Shipping. All finishers were given open-ended contracts of employment in their chosen disciplines.

Among the finishers are Abbas Ayoubi and Zaher Shalabi, two refugees from Afghanistan and Syria. Both originally took their initial entry-level vocational qualifications which gave them the foundation for their apprenticeships as metalworking operatives. “With their hard work and outstanding results, the two are leading examples of successful integration,” said Martin Stocker, Head of Apprentice Training.

Those finishing their apprenticeships were a total of 13 industrial mechanics, 7 mechatronics technicians, 4 metalworking operatives, 2 warehouse operatives, 2 warehouse logistics operatives, 1 automation electronics technician, 1 technical product designer and 1 design mechanic.

“We are delighted to make it possible for all summer finishers to be taken on, and wish them well for their future careers,” said Thomas Bittelmeyer, Chairman of the Works Council at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division also conducts apprentice training at other sites. Two mechatronics technicians have completed their training in Augsburg, as have 1 mechatronics technician and 2 industrial management assistants in Ruhstorf. Six trainees at the company's US site in Aiken are now also about to enter a new stage in their lives – they are due to complete their metalworking technician apprenticeships in August.

“With our new apprentice workshop and the extension of our training programs to include the professional direction information technology and the study program Bachelor of Computer Science, we are well prepared for future challenges. Digitalization and Industrie 4.0. are no foreign words to us“, Stocker says.

Young people who are interested in a vocational training or in a study program at Rolls-Royce can upload their applications to the applicant portal of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. In total, there are 90 vacant training positions to be filled for the next training year which starts in 2020.
