Friedrichshafen/Hamburg, September 23, 2008. At the world’s biggest ship trade fair, SMM in Hamburg (September 23-26), mtu will present its further improved Series 4000 engines for work boats. The long-stroke 4000 M63 engine from the “Iron Men” series available with 8, 12 or 16 cylinders has been specially optimized for the requirements of work boats. Specific consumption has been reduced to 195 grams per kilowatt hour, and maintenance intervals for major overhauls have been extended to up to 34,000 hours, while the power output of the 16-cylinder version has been increased from 2,000 to 2,240 kilowatts. The engine fulfills all of today’s emission regulations such as EPA Tier 2, ZKR 2 and EU Stage IIIA, and is technically equipped to fulfill stricter limits in the future.

Work boats such as ocean-going tugs, barges and fireboats are subject to extremely heavy-duty applications. The use of diesel engines in work boats varies enormously depending on the type of ship. Different types of applications place differing demands on the engine in use. Harbor tugs, which can be in use day and night and have to bring large liners or container ships into harbors often in rough seas, have a different type of engine than mega-yachts, for example. The key features of the “Iron Men” Series 4000 engines for work boats are therefore the lowest possible fuel consumption, long maintenance intervals for minimal lifetime costs, and maximal availability and reliability.

mtu is highly successful in this market. In the year 2007, over 20% more engines were sold for work boats than in the prior year. This success was not unexpected, however, because customers are increasingly recognizing the fact that mtu’s Series 4000 engines fulfill demanding technical and economical requirements, including ever stricter emission regulations.

This market is expanding worldwide, mainly due to the rising number of ocean-going ships. The volume of cargos transported by sea has increased substantially. As a result, transport volumes by inland waterway and in coastal waters have also risen, boosting demand for cargo ships and for support ships such as tugs.
