Power Generation

TYING MULTIPLE POWER SYSTEMS TOGETHER WITH INTELLIGENT CONTROLS

How a well-designed microgrid efficiently managed with intelligent controls can cost-effectively produce energy.

Integrating assets and optimizing operation

Growing demand, more flexible markets, decentralization, and renewable energy – all these factors are changing the way power plants are configured and run. The mu EnergetIQ Manager masters these challenges by seamlessly integrating a power plant’s diverse assets and automating the control of power generation, storage and demand. The opimized operation allows better planning, more efficiency, and saves money, fuel and emissions.

The new mtu EnergetIQ Manager is the brain of your power plant. It controls groups of power generation and storage assets and the distribution of power all the way from generation to your load. The mtu EnergetIQ Manager handles island installations and grid parallel installations to offer applications from response market to emergency power.

Scalability

The mtu EnergetIQ Manager is a server-based solution. This makes it possible to add operator stations throughout your facility from the workshop (e.g. panel pc) to the office (e.g. your laptop for daily use). Integration of 3rd party components.

Future-proof through upgrades

New assets can be integrated into your system with minimal software parameter changes. Additional operating stations can be added to the mtu EnergetIQ Manager to make all information and control possible from different locations.

Centralization and redundancy

The centralized system architecture makes it easy to handle, maintain and scale. When highest availability is necessary, redundancy ensures full functionality in case of component failures.

Redundancy

The mtu EnergetIQ Manager offers a wide range of redundancy options. The key is a continuous data-synchronization between a master and a backup controller. We also offer solutions for your redundant control network and connected assets.

Essential drivers

Power availability

The combination of power generation management and active load management ensures availability of power, even at the limits of your plant’s potential. Automated control of plants with little or no access to the public grid ensures the stability of electric power.

Cost saving

When your locally produced energy (electricity, heating and cooling) is less expensive than that from the grid, the mtu EnergetIQ Manager provides a complete control solution to manage your local resources.

Electricity balancing market / Grid stabilizing

If your plant is on-grid, the mtu EnergetIQ Manager, with its peak shaving and fast response functions, allows you to earn income by participating in the power balancing market.

Historical and live data can be accessed through multiple services for analytics or visualizations like single line diagrams, asset dashboards, configurable trending or alarm management

Group controller

To ensure power availability and stability the mtu EnergetIQ Manager controls the connected assets and preforms monitoring and protections functions to secure your complete installation.

Systen optimizer

No matter if you want to achieve minimum emissions or costs highest efficiency of your energy system is required. With internal load prediction based on AI, external weather forecasts and energy prize information the mtu EnergetIQ Manager ensures the best mix of energy by the help of model predictive controls.

Asset controller

The mtu EnergetIQ Asset Controller brings maximum asset performance by individual and mtu specific control philosophies (deep integration) , consistent UI/UX throughout the entire portfolio, highest serviceability by integration into mtu service toolchains and processes, analytic functions and connectivity to mtu cloud services.

Fuel cell

Fuel cells can provide clean electrical power from H2 to provide peak shaving or backup power.

Electrolyzer

Electrolyzers convert electrical energy in H2. H2 can be stored for later use in the same microgrid, but also as an energy carrier for mobile application. Electrolyzers are an important step into sector coupling.

BESS

Battery systems are the perfect solution for grid services or to stabilize your microgrid in case of fast and big load steps.

Renewables

Renewables are the primary energy source for the future. The feed green energy into your microgrid. Unfortunately these energies are not always available when needed.

Genset/CHP

In backup power applications gensets are the backbone of your microgrid when it comes to the need of high availability of electrical power for critical infrastructure. In prime power applications gensets can provide long time or even continuous power. Used in combination with CO2 neutral fuel and state of the art aftertreatment systems gensets are also environment friendly assets. Especially when also thermal energy (e.g. for sector coupling) is used in CHP units outstanding efficiency can be achieved.

DUPS

Dynamic Uninterrupted Power Supplies combine the fastest responses to anomalies in the power supply by the use of rotating mass with the backup power capabilities of a genset within one asset. DUPS can be used to continuously shape the power supply for critical loads to achieve highest power quality and in parallel ensure highest availability in case of grid failures.

Fuel Storage

Integration of fuel storage systems is elementary to ensure required availability in backup power applications but also if fuel is generated in the microgrid and is used for mobile applications. Even integration of fleet management systems for a potentially connected gas station can be taken into account for optimized fuel generation.

Switchgear

Like the EnergetIQ Manager is the brain of your microgrid, the switchgear is the electrical backbone. Tied integration of the switchgear components into the EnergetIQ control system is essential to provide different sequences of your microgrid.

mtu EnergetIQ, the Energy Management System (EMS) from Rolls-Royce Power Systems, uses artificial intelligence to control what is described as a microgrid. This predicts the user’s load profile. Based on past data, it can accurately predict when how much power will be needed. And from that, the system then calculates exacly which energy source to use at what time to optimally meet the energy demand. „Based on neutral networks, our system is self-learning. It learns about our customers’ energy consumption and uses it to drive future demand,“ explains Jan Henker, Senior Expert Automation and Conrols at Rolls-Royce and responsible for EnergetIQ.
