Tognum to supply Traction System for the World’s cleanest Diesel Locomotive

Friedrichshafen, 30 July 2008. Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen will supply the traction system for the World’s cleanest diesel locomotive. From End of July, an engine of the Series 4000 with exhaust gas after-treatment will be operated for trial on a switcher engine of the Deutsche Bahn. The research project with the short name “Locex“ (for “Locomotive with Clean Exhaust“) is scheduled to run for two years. “With this joint project, we are continuing the trials for future-orientated technologies for emission reduction“, explains Tognum CTO Dr. Gerd-Michael Wolters. “As a supplier of drive & propulsion systems, we are fully prepared to face future emission limits with technologies such as the Particulate Filter, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Urea Injection for NOx Reduction.“

The success of the exhaust gas after-treatment has already been proven on the test stand at MTU Friedrichshafen: this prototype exceeded the required exhaust gas regulations that will apply to diesel engines in rail vehicles throughout Europe from 2012, the future standard IIIB. Project partners Deutsche Bahn and MTU Friedrichshafen now want to provide practical proof of this success. The NOx emissions, including CO2, is supposed to be reduced by more than half, whilst soot particle emissions are planned to decrease to one tenth of current levels. These extremely low levels can be obtained by way of a combination of particulate filters and urea injection in the SCR catalyst (“Selective Catalytic Reduction“). To achieve this, the locomotive needs an additional tank with urea, as well as a suitable filling station in the locomotive depot in Kornwestheim. The Series 294 Locex loco provides a power output of 1,000 kilowatts and is utilized in heavy-duty switcher operations.
