Tognum awarded yet another large-volume onsite energy order in Asia

• mtu consortium to deliver 13 emergency power supply gensets for Chinese nuclear power plant
• Second large-volume contract in China within only a few weeks
• At € 85 million, the largest individual contract so far for the consortium

Friedrichshafen, 14 January 2009. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum is expanding its Asian onsite energy operations with yet another large-volume contract. A consortium led by Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen will provide 13 emergency power supply gensets with a value of € 85 million to the southern Chinese Yangjiang nuclear power plant. Only a few weeks earlier, it had been possible to secure a € 65 million contract covering the delivery of five emergency power supply gensets each for the nuclear power stations Fuqing and Fangjiashan in the Chinese provinces Fujian and Zhejiang.
This new project is the largest ever individual order the consortium has been awarded. Consortium partners include the joint venture between mtu and the Chinese Norinco Group set up in December 2007, Shanxi North MTU Diesel Co. Ltd., and the power generation specialist Areva NP. Whilst consortium leader mtu is providing a significant stake in the development and the engineering share of the emergency power supply systems, Areva NP is responsible for the delivery of the electrical components.
One important prerequisite for the contract to be awarded was to ensure the required national “added value” factor (local content). “With the help of our Chinese joint venture, we are complying with this prerequisite, enabling us to successfully participate in the booming Chinese market“, explains Christof von Branconi, member of the executive board and COO of Tognum AG with responsibility for the business unit "Onsite Energy & Components". As of 2010, the emergency power gensets are to be assembled and inspected in the joint venture’s plant in Datong. Consortium partner Areva NP has also contributed to the implementation of the local content requirements by way of their cooperation with the Chinese generator manufacturer SEMC.
The emergency power supply gensets of the Tognum brand mtu Onsite Energy are based on series 20V 956 TB33 diesel engines with an electrical power output of 6,000 kW. Following the initial signal, the emergency power gensets start up within ten seconds and are capable of taking on maximum loads on several load levels. In an emergency scenario, this enables them to supply the nuclear power plant’s vital consumer units with electricity, such as the coolant pumps and the electronic control system. These gensets will be delivered to the customer between 2011 and 2014.
