- Delivery of 20 mtu Onsite Energy gensets
- Contract value: 10 million US dollars
- 30 megawatt additional mains power
- Contract strategically significant for follow-up orders
Friedrichshafen, 4 November 2009. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum has boosted its onsite energy systems business with an order for 20 gensets destined for Yemen. The order volume is 10 million US dollars. The contractual partner, Al-Ahram Trading Co. Ltd., is a long-standing Yemenite distributor of Tognum. The mtu Onsite Energy diesel gensets will be in continuous operation for the energy provider Public Electricity Corporation (PEC) and supply additional electricity for the local power grid around the harbor town Hodeidah in the western part of Yemen. The prospect of follow-up orders for additional gensets and spare parts lends considerable strategic significance to this order.
The gensets powered by mtu 16V 4000 G63 diesel engines are housed in special containers, making them ideal for mobile use. In addition to the gensets, the order includes cooling and fuel systems as well as the related switchgear. Furthermore, Tognum will provide support for installation and connection of the containerized gensets which is planned for early next year.
"This order demonstrates that our system expertise is in strong demand. We provide our clients not only with a customer-specific engine but also the complete genset including equipment as well as our technical knowhow during the installation phase“, says Christof von Branconi, member of the Tognum executive board with responsibility for the business unit Onsite Energy & Components.
The demand for electricity in Yemen has increased considerably in the past few years and is likely to rise further in the future. This has caused a supply gap which the gensets operated by Al-Ahram Trading Co. Ltd. are meant to fill. They produce 30 megawatt of electric power in total, enough energy to power an estimated 15,000 homes in the United States.
Al-Ahram Trading Co. Ltd. has been awarded the contract by the Jemen Ministry for Electricity and Energy not least because the mtu Onsite Energy gensets operate at low fuel consumption rates and thus very economically. Clean combustion and electric, automatically controlled engine coolers are significant factors here.
