mtu Onsite Energy provides power, heating and cooling to Australian hospital

Tognum subsidiary MTU Detroit Diesel Australia Pty Ltd is to supply five diesel gensets and a natural gas compact trigeneration plant to the Australian Department of Health.

Friedrichshafen/Perth, 21 November 2011. Tognum subsidiary MTU Detroit Diesel Australia Pty Ltd is to supply five diesel gensets and a natural gas compact trigeneration plant to the Australian Department of Health. The emergency gensets will be powered by mtu 20V 4000 G23 diesel engines producing 2.5 MW of electricity each. The trigeneration plant will run in continuous operation with a mtu 20V 4000 L63 gas engine and is expected to clock up approximately 7,000 operational hours annually. The mtu Onsite Energy-branded trigeneration configuration at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Perth will incorporate an absorption chiller to provide cooling facilities in addition to heat and power. The equipment will be delivered from December this year in readiness for onsite start-up in July 2012. The order is worth around seven million euros.
The gas genset system of the type GB2148 will feature an electronic mtu Module Control (MMC) system and a customised heat exchange module. The MMC provides a line to the hospital’s power supply system and regulates the trigeneration module and emergency gensets. Among other functions, the MMC synchronises the gas genset to the mains outlet for operation in grid parallel mode. When mains failure mode is activated the MMC parallels with the diesel gensets and minimises any voltage differences. In conjunction with a rapid load acceptance, the absorption chiller can be automatically activated during grid outages.
In addition, the heat exchange module includes a pump cooling/heat exchanger, pumps, control valves, expansion vessels, and pressure relief valves. All assembled on a compact skid, the pump panel is also located on the module, ensuring complete design with minimum footprint. This design flexibility has ensured that all alternators for both the gas and diesel gensets are of the same manufacture and model, a preferred scenario for paralleling energy operations to essential health care facilities.
mtu, in conjunction with its subsidiary in Australia, will supply the gensets to Nilsen, a leading Australian electrical plant and service provider to the health sector. “Our collaborative work with Nilsen is strategically valuable to our business and to the expansion of our position within the Australian health sector,” said Sebastian Huchler, Regional Sales Manager at MTU Detroit Diesel Australia.
