- 4-year contract with Veolia Verkehr worth over €20 million
- mtu Powerpacks reconditioned in remanufacturing process
- Remanufacturing cheaper than purchasing new units
- Same warranty cover as for brand new Powerpacks
Friedrichshafen, April 2, 2013. Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, recently won a contract worth over €20 million for the remanufacturing of underfloor rail drives. The contract partner of Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH is Veolia Verkehr GmbH, leading private operator of regional services in Germany’s bus and rail system.
The basic agreement with Veolia Verkehr GmbH provides for the overhaul over the next 4 years of around 360 Powerpacks based on Series 183 and 1800 engines. During the remanufacturing process the Powerpacks are completely disassembled, cleaned, and tested and then put together again using either brand new components or components that have been re-conditoned. Parts such as the engine, gearbox, cooling system and generator for onboard power are overhauled by mtu in conjunction with the original manufacturers. A re-furbished Powerpack does not usually contain its own original parts, but identical parts which have already been re-worked. That way, mtu keeps the vehicle downtime as short as possible for the customer. Where necessary, some components are replaced by brand new parts. In the remanufacturing process, the throughput time at the works is ten days in total. The overhauled Powerpacks that then pass through the factory gates are as-new, correspond to the state-of-the-art, and are covered by the same warranty as brand-new Powerpacks.
For vehicle operators, having a Powerpack remanufactured offers cost advantages over purchasing a new unit, provided that the downtime to be coped with is kept short. Moreover, it makes a long-term contribution to sustainability by reducing power consumption and the use of natural resources.
