FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY – Out of the lecture hall and into the pits: With its mtu brand, Rolls-Royce Power Systems is once again one of the main sponsors of Formula Student Germany and prize-sponsor of the special “Most Innovative Powertrain Award”. This partnership also contributes to Rolls-Royce’s commitment to reach six million people through STEM programmes and activities by 2020. The international design competition, which sees students line up against each other in racing cars they've built themselves, will take place at the Hockenheimring race track between 9th and 14th August. mtu will also be sponsoring seven participating college teams who have also received mtu-manufactured components for their racing cars. According to the event organiser, the “Formula Student Germany e.V.” association, a total of 115 college teams from 34 countries are set to take part, pitting their wits against each other in a variety of disciplines and participating in discussions with experts in the industry.
“This competition brings us into contact with ambitious, highly skilled young engineers. The students share our enthusiasm and our passion for technology. That's why, for us too, Formula Student Germany is a really special event each year – and one we wouldn't want to miss out on”, said Marcus A. Wassenberg, Chief Financial Officer and Labour Director at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. mtu will be taking an exhibition stand to the event, presenting itself to students and offering information on the company, its products and the career opportunities available.
mtu is supporting the Global Formula Racing Team from the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Ravensburg, the Formula Student Team Weingarten from the University of Ravensburg-Weingarten, KARacing from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, TUfast from the Technical University of Munich, High Octane from the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen & Nuremberg, the Stuttgart University “Rennteam Stuttgart” and the Lions Racing Team from the Technical University of Brunswick. “The collaboration with business is very important to us. mtu is one of our biggest sponsors – and has been for many years. This time, too, mtu Manufacturing has produced complex components for us. We really like the direct, straightforward style of communication”, explained Michael Hayer, Organising Team Manager of the Global Formula Racing Team.
This year's Formula Student Germany will see 75 racing cars with conventional internal combustion engines lining up alongside 40 teams with electrically driven vehicles. Winning, however, is not just a matter of having built the fastest car. The overall marks for design, racing performance, fuel consumption, financial planning and sales strategy are what matters and what will deliver a victory. This year will also feature something new at the Hockenheimring: the additional category “Formula Student Driverless” which challenges the students to submit concept designs. The team with the best idea at the event in August will be given the “Formula Student Driverless Concept Award”. This technical discipline will then be featured for the first time in 2017.
