NOVI, MICH., U.S.A. – Rolls-Royce will be presenting the latest mtu power and propulsion solutions for onshore and offshore oil and gas applications on booth #3163 at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) from May 2 – 5 at NRG Park in Houston, Texas. The mtu Frac Pack and the mtu Frac Bi-Fuel Kit will be on display and mtu will also be presenting its 12V 4000 P83 engine, complete with new safety features. The joint venture between mtu and Weir Oil & Gas, announced in May last year, will have its own booth at the show for the first time under its own name, EPIX. The mtu brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Bernd Krüper, vice president of construction and agricultural business for the mtu brand at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: “mtu has many years of experience in the offshore and onshore market and is very familiar with the challenges facing the oil and gas industry. We offer customer solutions covering the entire lifecycle of our products. From individual components to entire projects, mtu is the reliable partner for mechanical and electrical drive systems.”

The mtu Frac Pack is powered by an mtu 12V 4000 T95 engine which meets the Tier 4 final emissions standard thanks to its state-of-the-art in-engine technology. This means no exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are required. The 12-cylinder engine for the Frac Pack is available in three power variants: 2250 hp (1678 kW), 2500 hp (1864 kW) and 2600 hp (1939 kW).

“Paired with the ZF 8TX gearbox, the mtu Frac Pack leads the field in terms of power delivery and torque, offering customers maximum throughput for complex fracking work,” said Krüper. The mtu Series 4000 T95 engine is also available separately as a 16-cylinder model delivering 3000 bhp (2237 kW).

The mtu Frac Bi-Fuel Kit enables operators to use a fuel mix consisting of up to 70% natural gas, in addition to diesel. It features a built-in control architecture specially designed for working on bore-holes and pumping operations. When combined with the mtu 12V 4000 S83 engine, using the Bi-Fuel Kit can cut fuel costs significantly.

The mtu 12V 4000 P83 engine, which is mainly used for fire pumps on offshore platforms, is fitted with new safety features that meet the standards of the ATEX Zone 2 explosion protection directive. The Series 4000 12-cylinder engine includes emergency air-shutoff flaps that close the engine's air intake in hazardous situations, such as when there is a sudden influx of gas. All of the engines’ systems feature redundant sensor equipment able to assume monitoring duties should failures occur. The exhaust pipework and turbochargers are water-cooled to keep surface temperatures as low as possible in order to prevent fires from starting in the event of an explosive atmosphere. Specially designed mesh guards protect vulnerable parts of the engine against damage from outside. These safety features are also available on the 16V and 20V cylinder versions.
OTC 2016 attendees are also invited to visit the mtu ValueCare display in the mtu exhibit, which will offer information on mtu’s complete portfolio of genuine parts and expert service, as well as remanufactured engines and parts.

The joint venture between mtu and Weir Oil & Gas will be presented for the first time under its own name and with its own separate stand (booth #4362). The company offers the industry’s first fully-integrated power system for fracking. It was purpose-built for this application by the joint venture partners. The drive system uses the capability of the new mtu Frac Pack with its mtu Series 4000 diesel engine and ZF 8 TX gear, together with Weir's SPM® pump technology. The joint venture also offers customers a one-stop shop for both sales and service for the complete system. Visit www.epixpower.com for more information.
