ROLLS-ROYCE WINS ORDER TO REMANUFACTURE AROUND 400 mtu POWERPACKS FOR TRANSDEV GROUP

Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with Transdev Group for the remanufacturing of around 400 mtu PowerPacks. Transdev GmbH (formerly Veolia Verkehr) is the largest private local transport operator on the German rail and bus network.

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY – Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with Transdev Group for the remanufacturing of around 400 mtu PowerPacks. Transdev GmbH (formerly Veolia Verkehr) is the largest private local transport operator on the German rail and bus network. The PowerPacks are used in regional trains run by Transdev Group across Germany. The Reman PowerPacks are due for remanufacturing from the beginning of 2017 until 2021. Transdev Group has been using mtu’s Reman service since taking up its activities in Germany in 2005. The mtu brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
This order is one of the biggest Reman contracts in mtu’s history. Bernd Krüper, Vice President Industrial Business at mtu said: “The fact that Transdev GmbH has once again chosen our Reman products is a notable indication of its confidence in our capabilities as a system provider and as a partner throughout the entire lifespan of vehicles – and it demonstrates how well our product meets customers’ needs.”
Reman is the industrial reconditioning of main components and engines alike. Standardised processes are used to dismantle and clean the mtu PowerPacks and then to test and re-build them using Reman components or brand new parts. The process automatically includes product improvements. The process is entirely anonymous, i.e. the customer does not necessarily get the same PowerPack back as it handed in for refurbishment. The PowerPacks reach their customers in as new condition, ready for another 18,000 hours (roughly 720,000 km) of operation. For some series, mtu is able to provide exchange PowerPacks (so-called swing units) before the drive systems are removed, thereby enabling the railcars to go back into service more quickly.
Denise Kurtulus, Director Sales Services at mtu, explained: “Our Reman products offer operators a whole host of benefits: The remanufactured PowerPacks are not just more affordable than new ones – the ability to get fast delivery of exchange PowerPacks also means we can keep our customers’ vehicle downtime extremely low. The fact that Reman PowerPacks are kitted out with the latest technology also helps save operating costs,” said Kurtulus.
Transdev Group uses the mtu Series 183 and 1800 PowerPacks in its Alstom Lint and Bombardier Talent vehicles. So far, mtu has overhauled over 1,100 rail PowerPacks using the Reman process. Railcars fitted with mtu Reman PowerPacks are currently in service in Germany, the UK, Denmark, Romania and Canada.
mtu PowerPacks are compact drive systems which include not just the engine and power train but all ancillary components necessary to power the vehicle, such as the cooling system and exhaust aftertreatment. mtu developed this concept 20 years ago – the first supplier in the world to do so – and has since delivered over 6,000 PowerPacks to rail customers across the world.
